The age-old questions, "Who are we? Why are we here? and "Where are we going? are explored in this warm and engaging book, the author's "passion project." This book surpasses others by creatively weaving together many diverse topics into a comprehensive, integrated whole. Drawing on ancient wisdom, quantum physics, spirituality, and anecdotal evidence, logical explanations and a simple, coherent framework are presented for contemplating the soul's journey through space and time. The contributions of pioneering researchers in the field of afterlife science are identified; the interconnectedness of humanity and nature is reviewed; the power of thoughts is illustrated; and realities of consciousness are described. Included within the 18 chapters are discussions on the dual nature of our body; soul and interspecies communications; energy entanglements and karmic ties; natural and traumatic deaths; experiences in the afterlife; and the nature of evil, dark forces, exalted beings, and God. Readers interested in metaphysics, psychology, wholistic health, and even criminology will find both practical and innovative information. Subjects that are not often examined are discussed in a no-nonsense and inspiring manner. Described as "mind blowing," this book is likely to challenge and expand ordinary perceptions of reality. Shirley Marshall, a retired college educator who started her professional life as an Army officer, has been on a lifelong quest to understand the meaning of life and our place and purpose. Her interest in death and the afterlife began decades ago at a time when these subjects were largely ignored or stigmatized. While working on her doctorate, she supplemented her metaphysical study with an academic focus on Thanatology. It is her goal to bring greater awareness and understanding to issues often neglected, deemed incomprehensible, or feared. When death is acknowledged as natural, universal, and necessary, life can be experienced with greater faith.

A scientific exploration into humanity’s obsession with the afterlife and quest for immortality from the bestselling author and skeptic Michael Shermer In his most ambitious work yet, Shermer sets out to discover what drives humans’ belief in life after death, focusing on recent scientific attempts to achieve immortality along with utopian attempts to create heaven on earth. For millennia, religions have concocted numerous manifestations of heaven and the afterlife, and though no one has ever returned from such a place to report what it is really like—or that it even exists—today science and technology are being used to try to make it happen in our lifetime. From radical life extension to cryonic suspension to mind uploading, Shermer considers how realistic these attempts are from a proper skeptical perspective. Heavens on Earth concludes with an uplifting paean to purpose and progress and how we can live well in the here-and-now, whether or not there is a hereafter.

Because every single one of us will die, most of us would like to know what—if anything—awaits us afterward, not to mention the fate of lost loved ones. Given the nearly universal vested interest in deciding this question in favor of an afterlife, it is no surprise that the vast majority of books on the topic affirm the reality of life after death without a backward glance. But the evidence of our senses and the ever-gaining strength of scientific evidence strongly suggest otherwise. In The Myth of an Afterlife: The Case against Life after Death, Michael Martin and Keith Augustine collect a series of contributions that redress this imbalance in the literature by providing a strong, comprehensive, and up-to-date casebook of the chief arguments against an afterlife. Divided into four separate sections, this collection opens with a broad overview of the issues, as contributors consider the strongest evidence of whether or not we survive death—in particular the biological basis of all mental states and their grounding in brain activity that ceases to function at death. Next, contributors consider a host of conceptual and empirical difficulties that confront the various ways of “surviving” death—from bodiless minds to bodily resurrection to any form of posthumous survival. Then essayists turn to internal inconsistencies between traditional theological conceptions of an afterlife—heaven, hell, karmic rebirth—and widely held ethical principles central to the belief systems supporting those notions. In the final section, authors offer critical evaluations of the main types of evidence for an afterlife. Fully interdisciplinary, The Myth of an Afterlife: The Case against Life after Death brings together a variety of fields of research to make that case, including cognitive neuroscience, philosophy of mind, personal identity, philosophy of religion, moral philosophy, psychical research, and anomalistic psychology. As the definitive casebook of arguments against life after death, this collection is required reading for any instructor, researcher, and student of philosophy, religious studies, or theology. It is sure to raise provocative issues new to readers, regardless of background, from those who believe fervently in the reality of an afterlife to those who do not or are undecided on the matter.

The Multiple Natural Origins Of Religion written by Richard Clark and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Religion categories.

This book traces how religion could have originated in prehistory and antiquity, out of natural human and prehuman behaviour. Religion is defined here as beliefs, conceptions, practices and roles concerned with the 'supernatural'. A variety of elements of religion can be identified. These include: spirits, ghosts, life after death, heaven, shamans. To try to reduce religion to a single original element is a mistake. There may be no single origin. But the individual elements have separate origins, and these can be traced. The common subjective component of religious elements is the numinous, which is commonly ascribed to external sources identified as 'supernatural' and 'spiritual'. The numinous sense is explained by means of certain neural processes with a focus in the temporal lobes. Probably for the first time, evidence is brought to bear from primatology, palaeoanthropology, ethnography, ancient history and history of religions, as well as theology, neurology and psycho-pharmacology. The field of origins of religion has been neglected by anthropology since the 1930s, but has enjoyed renewed interest from the 1990s. This wide-ranging interdisciplinary book makes an important contribution to the field.

When David died, Julie's grief seemed insurmountable. He'd been her goodness, her confidence, her faith. At least, that's what she'd always thought. Days after his death, he appeared to her children. Julie longed to believe, but how could she? It would be crazy. Foolish. Unacceptable to her church and God. Desperate to know for sure, she pleaded, "David, are you here? Do you exist? Prove it." And he did. Through an incredible journey of faith, discovery, and after death communications, David taught Julie the truth about love and the incredible magnificence of all that is God. He showed her just exactly who she is and how to live in the joy that comes from the Divine light that fills her. She learned to move forward boldly with no more fear, following her dreams and loving completely. Filled with worldly love, confusion, grief, and profound spiritual truths, this true story will fill your soul as you question your own journey and the wholeness and light you are as eternal, unconditional love. "It's love," David told her. "Love is the kingdom of God. It's here, Julie. I'm here. We're here. It's all happening right now. It's in you and always has been. It's who you are, your very nature. You, like so many others, made the mistake in thinking it was in someone else, but it's been in you all along."

What religious leaders, philosophers, and scientists have to say about consciousness and the soul. Whether animals and pets have souls. Is death just a mysterious phase in our journey? Does it lead to Heaven (or Hell)? Is it reincarnation or simply eternal blackness and unconsciousness? Do we continue to exist in some form or other beyond our physical bodies?
