Angela Mendes de Almeida, enfrentando a árdua missão de passar a limpo a trágica história política do movimento comunista no século XX, contribui para essa necessária releitura do passado. Por mais que se conheçam os crimes do stalinismo, sobretudo depois da abertura dos arquivos da antiga União Soviética, o elenco impressionante de manobras inescrupulosas, abusos, mentiras e assassinatos cometidos em nome da "pátria socialista" é um soco no estômago. O livro presta assim homenagem aos militantes que pagaram com a vida por se recusarem a aderir às falsificações do stalinismo. O modo como Angela estrutura seu material sustenta uma tese de difícil refutação: a degenerescência stalinista, longe de constituir uma irrupção maquiavélica circunscrita no tempo, já estava contida nos elementos autoritários do bolchevismo. Não há que ter ilusões. Numa incisiva rejeição do socialismo real ancorado no terror de Estado, Angela toma partido pelas vítimas do terror, pelo pluralismo de ideias e de organizações dos trabalhadores, pela autonomia crítica, pelos direitos humanos.
