Written in the tradition of G. Ludwig’s groundbreaking works, this book aims to clarify and formulate more precisely the fundamental ideas of physical theories. By introducing a basic descriptive language of simple form, in which it is possible to formulate recorded facts, ambiguities of physical theories are avoided as much as possible. In this approach the field of physics that should be described by a theory is determined by basic concepts only, i.e. concepts that can be explained without a theory. In this context the authors introduce a new concept of idealization and review the process of discovering new concepts. They believe that, when the theories are formulated within an axiomatic basis, solutions can be found to many difficult problems such as the interpretation of physical theories, the relations between theories as well as the introduction of physical concepts. The book addresses both physicists and philosophers of science and should encourage the reader to contribute to the understanding of the lasting core of physical knowledge about the real structures of the world.

This is not an introduction to physics but an analysis of its founda tions. Indeed, the aims of this book are: (1) to analyze the form and content of some of the key ideas of physics; (2) to formulate several basic physical theories in an explicit and orderly (i. e. , axiomatic) fashion; (3) to exhibit their presuppositions and discuss some of their philosoph ical implications; (4) to discuss some of the controversial issues, and (5) to debunk certain dusty philosophical tenets that obscure the under standing of physics and hinder its progress. To the extent to which these goals are attained, the volume can serve as a companion to studies in theoretical physics aiming at deepening the understanding of the logical structure and the physical meaning of our science. In order to keep the book slender, whole fields of basic physical research had to be excluded - chiefly many-body physics, quantum field theories, and elementary particle theories. A large coverage was believed to be less important than a comparatively detailed analysis and reconstruction of three representative monuments: classical mechan ics, general relativity, and quantum mechanics, as well as their usually unrecognized presuppositions. The reader is invited to join the project and supply some of the many missing chapters - or to rewrite the present ones entirely.

This is a collection of technical papers in the foundations and the philoso It takes both "foundations" phy of physics with emphasis on the former. and "philosophy" in their narrow technical senses but it construes "physics" lato sensu, as including all the sciences of nonliving systems. All eleven papers constituting this volume were written for it. The problems tackled in this book concern certain basic concepts, hypotheses, theories, and research programmes in physical science. Some of these problems are topical, others new, but they are all fundamental and the subject of research and controversy. Consequently this volume is expected to serve those students, teachers and researchers who enjoy learning, teaching, discussing or doing theoretical physics. It is addressed to the nine to niners rather than to the nine to fivers. It is expected to attract the theoretician in search for new basic ideas, the teacher eager to perfect his understanding of physical theory and transmit his own zeal and his own doubts, as well as the student anxious to get down to essentials. This book may also interest the mathematician for whom physics offers a challenge (or a good pretext). Finally, it should get the attention of the philosopher of science aware of the advantages of philosophizing on foundations research problems rather than on the popularization of some results of research. There are at least two reasons for valuing foundations research.

The thesis in the book starts with questioning existing postulates and introducing one new postulate: Nothing exists in isolation, i.e. everything exists in relations. Then, based on this postulate, a principle is formulated and a theory that takes us further and deeper into the physical reality. 1. The thesis is that in the physical reality continuous flows of packages moves in “tubes” between all systems resulting in gravitation, force and energy. These flows contain all mass in Universe, including dark matter and dark energy, i.e. the same principle rules at all levels of the physical reality. 2. The equation E=mc2 is inquired, where Einstein ́s own criterion for a complete theory that “every element of the physical reality must have a counterpart in the physical theory”, raises the question which element the concept c2 has in the physical reality. How do we deal with this contradiction? 3. The principle of relations launces a new explanation of the equation E=mc2, which has impacts on the general theory of relativity and then it is possible with a new interpretation of gravitation, which is demonstrated. 4. In the last chapter everything ends in one formula (equation), which is the most important dealing with the theoretical foundation of physical reality, uniting the theories of relativity and quantum, with dark matter and dark energy. Whether you're ready for a new perspective on the world or not, this book will provoke your brain into reexamining everything you think you know about the physical reality.

In nine new essays, distinguished philosophers of science take on outstanding philosophical issues that arise in the exploration of the foundations of contemporary, especially physical scientific theories. In the first part of the book issues of scientific method are explored. What are we asking when we pose scientific "why?" questions? How does probability play a role in answering such questions? What are scientific laws of nature? How can we understand what abstract theories are telling us about the world? What is the structure of the theories we use to explain the observable phenomena? Finally, how do theories evolve over time and what consequence do such changes have for our intuition that science is seeking the truth? In the second part of the volume, foundational issues are explored in a number of crucial physical theories. What do our best available theories tell us about space and time? When we apply quantum theory to fields or other systems with infinite degrees of freedom, what new foundational puzzles appear and how might a theory of interpretation deal with them? Finally, what are the crucial foundational issues in statistical mechanics, where probabilities are applied to explain macroscopic thermal phenomena?

Quantum mechanics is the foundation of the universe. At the bedrock of quantum mechanics lies mathematics--the path-integral formulation. In this text, a variety of novel theories pertaining to quantum mechanics, and the mathematical foundations of theoretical physics, are surveyed. After the publication of his previous book, "Physics Reforged," concerning his multiverse theory, Julian von Abele has returned to expand on his multiverse hypothesis, and present his novel theory of time. Is time multidimensional? Is reality plural, or whole? How did the universe begin, and how will it end? Do alternate realities exist? All these questions, and more, are answered in this remarkable anthology of academic papers on quantum theory, cosmology, and novel theories of time. Intended primarily for physicists and mathematicians, this book offers an intriguing gateway into some of the most fundamental problems of physics.

The Truth Of Science written by Roger G. Newton and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Philosophy categories.

It's not a scientific truth that has come into question lately but the truth--the very notion of scientific truth. Bringing a reasonable voice to the culture wars that have sprung up around this notion, this book offers a clear and constructive response to those who contend, in parodies, polemics and op-ed pieces, that there really is no such thing as verifiable objective truth--without which there could be no such thing as scientific authority. A distinguished physicist with a rare gift for making the most complicated scientific ideas comprehensible, Roger Newton gives us a guided tour of the intellectual structure of physical science. From there he conducts us through the understanding of reality engendered by modern physics, the most theoretically advanced of the sciences. With its firsthand look at models, facts, and theories, intuition and imagination, the use of analogies and metaphors, the importance of mathematics (and now, computers), and the "virtual" reality of the physics of micro-particles, The Truth of Science truly is a practicing scientist's account of the foundations, processes, and value of science. To claims that science is a social construction, Newton answers with the working scientist's credo: "A body of assertions is true if it forms a coherent whole and works both in the external world and in our minds." The truth of science, for Newton, is nothing more or less than a relentless questioning of authority combined with a relentless striving for objectivity in the full awareness that the process never ends. With its lucid exposition of the ideals, methods, and goals of science, his book performs a great feat in service of this truth.

The Standard Model is inconsistent with that of general relativity, to the point that one or both theories break down under certain conditions (for example within known space time singularities like the Big Bang and the centers of black holes beyond the event horizon). The appearance of singularities in any physical theory is an indication that something is wrong and that there is a need for new physics. Singularities can be avoided in GR and any field theory through the introduction of an efficient regularization procedure as this book directs. Regularization is a method of modifying observables which have singularities in order to make them finite by the introduction of a suitable parameter called regulator. The regulator, also known as a "cutoff", models our lack of knowledge about physics at unobserved scales (e.g. scales of small size or large energy levels). It compensates for the possibility that "new physics" (beyond the SM) may be discovered at those scales which the present theory is unable to model, while enabling the current theory to give accurate predictions as an "effective theory" within its intended scale of use. Therefore the main objective of this book is to discover new physics (Quantum Gravity) at those scales (or extra dimensions) which the General relativity theory and Quantum mechanics is unable to model. This has been achieved and remains the work of an experimenter to verify. While this is a new approach to quantum gravity, it reproduces the results in loop quantum gravity and string theory as the book indicates. This book provides a complete overview of quantum gravity from the frontiers of theoretical physics research for graduate students and researchers.
