In common with all human beings as spiritual creatures, Christians carry a set of beliefs about the reality which they name God which underlies existence and which is a guide through life. For some, the seeds of this were planted in early childhood - by parents, Sunday School, Catechism class or early experiences of the sacred church - and were thought about, questioned and became more personal as these people matured. For others, the set of beliefs came later in life as they sought to understand what being a Christian meant.

A Framework For The Good written by Kevin Kinghorn and has been published by University of Notre Dame Pess this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-15 with Philosophy categories.

This book provides an ethical framework for understanding the good and how we can experience it in increasing measure. In Part 1, Kevin Kinghorn offers a formal analysis of the meaning of the term "good," the nature of goodness, and why we are motivated to pursue it. Setting this analysis within a larger ethical framework, Kinghorn proposes a way of understanding where noninstrumental value lies, the source of normativity, and the relationship between the good and the right. Kinghorn defends a welfarist conception of the good along with the view that mental states alone directly affect a person's well-being. He endorses a Humean account of motivation—in which desires alone motivate us, not moral beliefs—to explain the source of the normative pressure we feel to do the good and the right. Turning to the place of objectivity within ethics, he concludes that the concept of "objective wrongness" is a misguided one, although a robust account of "objective goodness" is still possible. In Part 2, Kinghorn shifts to a substantive, Christian account of what the good life consists in as well as how we can achieve it. Hume's emphasis of desire over reason is not challenged but rather endorsed as a way of understanding both the human capacity for choice and the means by which God prompts us to pursue relationships of benevolence, in which our ultimate flourishing consists.

Winner of the 2008 Grawemeyer Award in Religion This long-awaited book by one of American Christianity's foremost ethicists proposes a framework for sexual ethics whereby justice is the criterion for all loving, including love that is related to sexual activity and relationships. It begins with historical and cross-cultural explorations, then addresses the large questions of embodiment, gender, and sexuality, and finally delineates the justice framework for sexual ethics. Though Just Love's particular focus is Christian sexual ethics, Farley's framework is broad enough to have relevance for multiple traditions. Also covered are specific issues in sexual ethics, including same-sex relationships, marriage and family, divorce and second marriage.

While it is often thought that a serious theism is largely incompatible with a radical ontological pluralism, Mark McLeod-Harrison defends the claim that ontological relativism not only requires theism but is consistent with traditional Christianity. Building primarily on the work of Nelson Goodman and Michael Lynch, McLeod-Harrison spells out what is right and what is missing from contemporary pluralism. Proposing a new defence, he explains the need for God and shows how and why radical relativistic pluralism is consistent with traditional Christianity. He also explores how pluralism can be defended against the notorious "consistency challenge" and analyses the relationships among noetic irrealism, pluralism, necessity, God's nature, theories of truth, and idealism. Philosophers working in the field of realistic/antirealistic metaphysics, theologians struggling with how to put traditional Christian claims together with our postmodern situation, and those interested in a new framework For The integration of faith and theorizing will findMake/Believing the World(s)of great interest.

Christian Faith in Contemporary Society is a comprehensive primer on biblical literacy written especially for: Baby Boomers and others who by reason of illness or aging are contemplating their mortality and wish to explore Christian claims of eternal life, Non-believing singles contemplating dating a devout Christian, who wish to know what they may be in for should they fall in love, Mature Christians whose intelligent, highly-educated children or grandchildren are rejecting the faith, Christians who wish to increase their knowledge of the faith for personal spiritual growth and greater effectiveness in presenting the faith to others, and The curious uninitiated who would like in-depth knowledge of what the Christian faith is all about. The author, a Harvard lawyer, has applied his professional skills to conduct a forensic analysis of the most formidable premise of the Christian faith-the resurrection of Jesus from the dead and his ascension into heaven while still alive-and reports on the results of that analysis. Because Christianity has played a key role in the development of Western civilization, a knowledge of Christianity is necessary for a proper understanding of our society. This book can help the reader gain that knowledge.
