This book deepens the understanding of the work carried out by professional women in Spanish film and television since the arrival of democracy, a period of radical changes that saw an emergence of female talent. Although most of the literature on women and media deals with female film directors, this book also addresses television, a medium where the presence of women was significant throughout this period. This book makes an important contribution to the study of the history of women in Spanish media, focusing on the work of some well-known names, while also rescuing from oblivion others now forgotten. It brings together scholars from Spain, the United States and Ireland to analyze films and television programs written or directed by female professionals such as Pilar Miró, Josefina Molina, Cecilia Bartolomé, Rosa Montero, Carmen Martín Gaite, Cristina Andreu, Isabel Coixet and Paloma Chamorro. The book also includes four interviews with screenwriter Esmeralda Adam, television executive Carmen Caffarel, filmmaker Ana Díez and television director Matilde Fernández. Their reflections on personal and professional experiences shed light on the changes that took place in Spanish society during this period and the challenges they have faced in their careers.

This book provides a concise study of eye gaze tracking as a direct controller of electronic displays and interfaces inside cars and other vehicles. The author explores the prospect of controlling a vehicle’s internal system via the drivers’ eye gaze and for the vehicles to analyse and respond to a drivers' change in cognitive load too. New algorithms tackling micro-saccadic eye movements and the inaccuracy in eye gaze tracking for controlling on-screen pointers are presented and explored. Multimodal fusion algorithms involving eye gaze and finger tracking systems are presented and validated and important results have been obtained on gaze controlled interfaces and visual responses whilst encountering oncoming road hazards. A set of user trials to validate the algorithms involving driving simulators are also presented by the author. Exploring the Use of Eye Gaze Controlled Interfaces in Automotive Environments would of great importance to researchers and designers alike, within the fields of automotive design and engineering, human-computer interaction (HCI) and intelligent interfaces.

The end of the eighteenth century saw the start of a new craze in Europe: tiny portraits of single eyes that were exchanged by lovers or family members. Worn as brooches or pendants, these minuscule eyes served the same emotional need as more conventional mementoes, such as lockets containing a coil of a loved one’s hair. The fashion lasted only a few decades, and by the early 1800s eye miniatures had faded into oblivion. Unearthing these portraits in Treasuring the Gaze, Hanneke Grootenboer proposes that the rage for eye miniatures—and their abrupt disappearance—reveals a knot in the unfolding of the history of vision. Drawing on Alois Riegl, Jean-Luc Nancy, Marcia Pointon, Melanie Klein, and others, Grootenboer unravels this knot, discovering previously unseen patterns of looking and strategies for showing. She shows that eye miniatures portray the subject’s gaze rather than his or her eye, making the recipient of the keepsake an exclusive beholder who is perpetually watched. These treasured portraits always return the looks they receive and, as such, they create a reciprocal mode of viewing that Grootenboer calls intimate vision. In the past few years, with the advances in microelectronics and digital te- nology, cameras became a widespread media. This, along with the enduring increase in computing power boosted the development of computer vision s- tems. The International Conference on Computer Vision Systems (ICVS) covers the advances in this area. This is to say that ICVS is not and should not be yet another computer vision conference. The ?eld of computer vision is fully covered by many well-established and famous conferences and ICVS di?ers from these by covering the systems point of view. ICVS 2008 was the 6th International Conference dedicated to advanced research on computer vision systems. The conference, continuing a series of successful events in Las Palmas, Vancouver, Graz, New York and Bielefeld, in 2008 was held on Santorini. In all, 128 papers entered the review process and each was reviewed by three independent reviewers using the double-blind review method. Of these, 53 - pers were accepted (23 as oral and 30 as poster presentation). There were also two invited talks by P. Anandan and by Heinrich H. Bultho ̈ ?.
