This monograph introduces a new mathematical model in population dynamics that describes two species sharing the same environmental resources in a situation of open hostility. Its main feature is the expansion of the family of Lotka-Volterra systems by introducing a new term that defines aggression. Because the model is flexible, it can be applied to various scenarios in the context of human populations, such as strategy games, competition in the marketplace, and civil wars. Drawing from a variety of methodologies within dynamical systems, ODEs, and mathematical biology, the authors' approach focuses on the dynamical properties of the system. This is accomplished by detecting and describing all possible equilibria, and analyzing the strategies that may lead to the victory of the aggressive population. Techniques typical of two-dimensional dynamical systems are used, such as asymptotic behaviors regulated by the Poincaré–Bendixson Theorem. A New Lotka-Volterra Model of Competition With Strategic Aggression will appeal to researchers and students studying population dynamics and dynamical systems, particularly those interested in the cross section between mathematics and ecology.

Mites are very small animals, characterized by wingless and eyeless bodies, in which sociality has been discovered. This book offers detailed descriptions of the diverse social systems and the social evolution of mites, ranging from genetic to ecological aspects. Through a broad spectrum of studies including traditional natural history, taxonomy, modern evolutionary and behavioral ecology, and theoretical models as well, the book addresses a number of important findings on plant mite evolution and species radiation, with the author succeeding in combining theoretical and practical approaches in behavioral ecology by proposing a new game theory. These findings reflect the complex evolutionary history of these taxa and also help to point out clearly what is known and what is not yet known to date. Mites have been considered a minor animal group, but the author shows that mites actually possess great diversity and therefore make unique materials for evolutionary and behavioral studies.

Ecology is the scientific study of the distributions, abundance and relations of organisms and their interactions with the environment. Ecology includes the study of plant and animal populations, plant and animal communities and ecosystems. Ecosystems describe the web or network of relations among organisms at different scales of organization. An ecosystem is a self-contained, dynamic system made of a population of species in its physical environment. This concept is used to study the complex interactions between the organisms-plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi-that make up the community. There are many different ways in which the community of organisms interacts. Environment means everything around to a living being. Especially the circumstances of life of people or society in their life conditions. It comprises the set of natural, social and cultural values existing in a place and at a particular time, that influence in the life of the human being and in the generations to come. Pollution is anything that makes the earth dirty and unhealthy. Land, air, and water are all affected by pollution. Pollution takes up space on our land. Many of the things people use every day come in packages, like food, games, school supplies, and electronics. Environmental science is the systematic study of our environment and our proper place in it. A relatively new field, environmental science is highly interdisciplinary, integrating natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities in a broad, holistic study of the world around us. The aim of the present book is to provide its readers an acquaintance with the recent research trends in the area of ecology, environmental science and pollution.

The best parts of physics are the last topics that our students ever see. These are the exciting new frontiers of nonlinear and complex systems that are at the forefront of university research and are the basis of many high-tech businesses. Topics such as traffic on the World Wide Web, the spread of epidemics through globally-mobile populations, or how the synchronization of global economies are governed by universal principles just as profound as Newton's laws. Nonetheless, the conventional university physics curriculum reserves most of these topics for graduate study because of the assumed need for advanced mathematics. However, by using only linear algebra and calculus, combined with exploratory computer simulations, all of these topics become accessible to advanced undergraduate students. The structure of this book combines the three main topics of modern dynamics - chaos theory, dynamics on complex networks, and general relativity - into a coherent framework. By taking a geometric view of physics, concentrating on the time evolution of physical systems as trajectories through abstract spaces, these topics share a common and simple mathematical language through which any student can gain a unified physical intuition. Given the growing importance of complex dynamical systems in many areas of science and technology, this text provides students with an up-to-date foundation for their future careers. This second edition has an updated introductory chapter and has added key topics to help students prepare for their GRE physics subject exam. It also has expanded chapters on Hamiltonian dynamics, Hamiltonian chaos, and Econophysics, while increasing the number of homework problems at the end of each chapter. The second edition is designed to fulfill the textbook needs of any advanced undergraduate course in mechanics.
