Excerpt from A New System of Paper Currency The subscriber believes that the right of property in ideas, is as valid, in the view both of the Common and constitutional law of this country, as is the right of property in material things; and that patent and copyright laws, instead of superseding, annulling, or being a substitute for, that right, are simply aids to it. In publishing this system of Paper Currency, he gives notice that he is the inventor of it, and that he reserves to himself all the exclusive property in it, which, in law, equity, or natural right, he can have; and, especially, that he reserves to himself the exclusive right to furnish the Articles of Association to any Banking Companies that may adopt the system. Excerpt from Money and Paper Currency: A Study for the Times We cannot shut our eyes to the fact that a large section of the Canadian public are inclined to discuss the whole subject of currency de noxo - to challenge existing systems, and to question propositions hitherto undoubted. Interest is added to the discussion by the fact that certain bank charters are about to expire, and by the proposal of the government to increase the circulation of Dominion notes. Under these circumstances, an addition to the literature of the question needs no apology for its appearance, though it can only become "current" by favor of the public. I cannot pretend, at this time of day, to write anything both novel and sound on this subject. It has been my object to present a few leading principles and arguments in a convenient form, and to apply them to the solution of some problems now under discussion. It is unnecessary to consider all possible theories. When people see clearly that there is no mystery about currency, except such as has been created by those who claim to expound it, they will be able to judge new propositions, as they arise, by common sense reasoning from first principles. The discussion of some of these "first principles" is embarrassing, from their very elementary character. They resemble Euclid's axioms in so far that they can only be proved by stating them. If a man does not admit at once that "the whole is greater than a part," no logic will convince him. The same is true of some elementary truths about currency. Excerpt from A Select Collection of Scarce and Valuable Tracts and Other Publications on Paper Currency and Banking This collection, of the most valuable of the English tracts and publications on paper currency and banks, may be regarded as supplementary to the volume of tracts on metallic currency, printed for the Political Economy Club. It does not, however, contain any tract having especial reference to paper money, properly so-called, that is, to notes which are legal tender without being convertible at the pleasure of the holder into certain amounts of coin. The value of this variety of paper currency depends on the extent to which it may be issued compared with the demand, or rather with the business it has to perform. Whether those by whom it is issued are in good or bad credit is immaterial. It obtains currency by its issuers having power to make it legal tender; and nothing more is required to sustain its value than that it should be issued in moderate quantities. The value of the assignats issued during the French Revolution was at first nearly equal to that of metallic money; but the quantities of them thrown into circulation being rapidly and enormously increased, their value proportionally declined, till in the end they became all but worthless.
