Excerpt from Christopher Columbus and the New World of His Discovery: A Narrative I have received the proofs of the new and revised edition of your Columbus, and I have noted the passages which have been materially altered from the original edition. This book marks an epoch in Columbian literature for in it the hero who discovered the New World is shown for the first time as a living man. You have raised him from the dust of documents and shown him as a human being, a creature of flesh and blood who acts thinks, loves and fights like ourselves, and who is subject, as all real men must be, to passions, mistakes and illusions. You have had the courage to cut loose from the traditional line followed by all the modern biographers of Columbus; and although I differ from you in certain details, I look upon your book as giving a more true and lively picture of the great discoverer than is contained in any other work written on the subject. Excerpt from Writings of Christopher Columbus: Descriptive of the Discovery and Occupation of the New World Europe and Asia. During the semi-barbaric and feudal times which succeeded the Roman empire this was Of especial value to the former, for the peace and knowl edge needed for arts and manufactures were slow to come, and it turned to the Older civilization for them, sending in exchange such few things as it possessed that Asia wanted, and eking out its balances with gold and silver. SO steadily had these been drained away from Europe during these stormy centuries that Asia was termed it the Golden East. The trade with this and Of jewels, precious metals, wondrous fabrics, and spices, was the most profitable Of the time, and enriched the centres Of distribution to a marvelous de gree. First Constantinople, then Amalfi, and finally Venice and Genoa, became rich and great by it. The routes through the Black Sea, Persian Gulf, and Red Sea, though involving caravans and transshipment, were sufficient; and from the Mediterranean the products were distributed over Europe with ease. Europe stood with its back to the west. All the interest and thought it could spare from its own concerns were centered in the east, and but for an accident would have so continued for an indefinite time. Yet so curiously are causes and effects blended that it was this very concen tration and intensity of interest that eventually led to the exploration of the great west. Excerpt from Heroes of Discovery in America The explorers of this continent were great men in their day, and they have made a great mark on the his tory of the land they made known. For more than four centuries their work has been kept up and it is not yet complete, for there are areas still in America on which the foot of the white man has not been set. From Columbus, who daringly crossed an unknown ocean to discover an unknown continent, to Peary, who in our own day has time and again plunged into the seas of ice in restless quest of the mysterious pole, the list is a long one and is filled with names of valiant and unconquerable men. Heroes of discovery are these in the highest sense, and it is fitting that the story of their deeds should be put upon record. This we have sought to do, in as full a sense as the space at our command permits, endeavoring to omit none of the great discoverers, none of the leaders in this great drama of the opening of a new world. It is hoped that readers will find these tales full of interest and inspira tion and gain from them an adequate sense of what was accomplished in the great work of exploring a continent. Excerpt from Exploration, Discovery and Conquest of the New World: Containing the Thrilling Adventures of Christopher Columbus, Americus Vespucius, John and Sebastian Cabot, Etc His first service was under the command of a relative, a Colombo who had for some time past held the rank of an admiral. We cannot tell the de gree of relationship; probably it was very distant; for, as we have seen, the father of the discoverer was a poor man, a mechanic. In the fifteenth cen tury, a man who worked was thought very little of; quite below consider ation, in fact; and perhaps the old admiral was not very proud of his poor relations. Excerpt from The Story of Geographical Discovery: How the World Became Known In the Middle Ages, much of this knowledge, like all other, was lost, and we shall have to record how knowledge was replaced by imagina tion and theory. The true inheritors of Greek science during that period were the Arabs, and the few additions to real geographical knowledge at that time were due to them, except in so far as commercial travellers and pilgrims brought a more intimate knowledge of Asia to the West. The discovery of America forms the be ginning of a new period, both in modern history and in modern geography. In the four hundred years that have elapsed since then, more than twice as much of the inhabited globe has become known to civilised man than in the preceding four thousand years. The result is that, except for a few patches of Africa, South America, and round the Poles, man knows roughly what are the physical resources of the world he inhabits, and, except for minor details, the history of geographical discovery is practically at an end.
