"In A Noble Pursuit, Gloria Polizzotti Greis provides an overview of the European Iron Age and brings the duchess's archaeological career to life. Archaeology as a profession with defined standards and methodologies was still in its infancy at the turn of the twentieth century, and the duchess's fieldwork, which became increasingly sophisticated and scientific over time, mirrored the development of archaeological practice in Europe." "The sites the duchess excavated encompass the scope of Iron Age cultures in Slovenia and form an important resource for studying the cultural history of the region. Most of the materials from these sites reside today in the Mecklenburg Collection at Harvard University's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, where they make up the largest systematically excavated group of European antiquities outside of Europe. This volume presents a selection of artifacts from the collection, photographed by Hillel S. Burger: bronze pendants, bracelets, neck rings, helmets, and armor; glass and amber beads; iron axes, swords, and spears; Roman glassware; and Greek wine vessels." "Greis incorporates previously unpublished archival documents, including the duchess's personal correspondence, to create a portrait of an extraordinary woman. This account of the Duchess of Mecklenburg and her archaeological contributions provides an overview of the scope and importance of the collection as a whole and attests to the enduring quality of the duchess's pioneering work."--BOOK JACKET.

Lord Dudley Beauchamp is utterly miserable. A cannon blast damaged his left eye, so he has been released from the Royal Navy and forced to return home to London. He only wants to be left alone, but his family and friends refuse to let him be. They convince him to travel to Felixstowe for a fortnight in hopes that a change of scenery will do him good. Once there, he meets his friend's infuriating cousin, who is quite possibly the most obstinate woman he has ever met. Miss Josie Mowbray is obsessed. She spends her days practicing archery and her evenings scouring the shorelines looking for any sign of the smugglers who murdered her half-brother. When her cousin proposes a deal that would give her more freedom to search for the smugglers, she leaps at the chance, even though the agreement requires her to join the dreaded marriage mart in London. Dudley is cantankerous. Josie is stubborn. Neither of them expects a friendship to form between them. When Dudley offers to help Josie discover proof of the smugglers, his heart begins to soften, and he realizes that she is everything he never wanted... until she becomes everything he needs. But will it be too late?

Critical texts, translations, documents, and photographs on the work of the Situationist International. This volume is a revised and expanded version of a special issue of the journal October (Winter 1997) that was devoted to the work of the Situationist International (SI). The first section of the issue contained previously unpublished critical texts, and the second section contained translations of primary texts that had previously been unavailable in English. The emphasis was on the SI's profound engagement with the art and cultural politics of their time (1957-1972), with a strong argument for their primarily political and activist stance by two former members of the group, T. J. Clark and Donald Nicholson-Smith. Guy Debord and the Situationist International supplements both sections. It reprints important, hard to find essays by Giorgio Agamben, Libero Andreotti, Jonathan Crary, Thomas Y. Levin, Greil Marcus, and Tom McDonough and doubles the number of translations of primary texts, which now encompass a broader and more representative range of the SI's writings on culture and language. In a field still dominated by hagiography, the critical texts were selected for their willingness to confront critically the history and legacy of the SI. They examine the group within the broader framework of the historical and neo-avant-gardes and, beyond that, the postwar world in general. The translations trace the SI's reflections on the legacy of the avant-garde in art and architecture, particularly on the linguistic and spatial significance of montage aesthetics. Many of the translated works are by Guy Debord (1932-1994), the impresario of the SI, especially known for his book The Society of the Spectacle.
