In the constant debate about education, the voices of parents and community members are often forgotten and overlooked. In A Parent's POWER, Sylvia P. Simms shares the importance of parent involvement in the schooling of children and the essential role community plays in education. Through her experience as a student in North Philadelphia, to her time on the Philadelphia School Reform Commission, to her experience as a visitor to New Orleans right as Hurricane Katrina hit, and ultimately her creation of the "PARENT POWER" organization, Sylvia shares an honest, unflinching experience of what it is like to try and create change in our education system. This book is a call to action for every teacher, administrator, school staff member, parent, and community member to more closely examine whose voices we are including in our conversations on education-and whose voices we need to include. What People Are Saying Millions didn't make it, but because of PARENT POWER I was one of the parents that was able to assist my children and others children in becoming productive citizens. Thank you Big Syl." -Cecil Parsley, Member, PARENT POWER "Everyone who works in urban schools needs to read this powerful memoir spoken into existence by one of Philadelphia's most influential community activist for quality education. Simm's voice is clear and direct. Her message is undeniable: community and family voices in schools is too often drowned out by policy, procedures and politics and it is at the peril of the very students that our schools have been created to serve." -James Earl Davis, Bernard C. Watson Endowed Chair in Urban Education, Professor of Higher Education, Temple University "I learned a lot working with Sylvia starting with the Title I Committee and then PARENT POWER. But as much as I learned as I negotiated my own way, I learned more by watching Sylvia. As Sylvia would say "We don't know what we don't know". Thank you, Sylvia, for forging ahead and setting an example even when the path was rarely clear or straightforward." -Jay Cohen, Member, PARENT POWER, Founder and Executive Director, xSoTec, LLC "As we walk in the path aligned to Divine order, there are victories and valleys. There are opportunities to teach and opportunities to learn. Sylvia Simms, living in her purpose, captured a testimony, sharing her experiences to ignite the awareness of others, for the benefit of our community." -Malika Savoy, Deputy Superintendent, Chief Academic Officer Allentown School District, Former Chief Academic, Support Officer School District of Philadelphia

Parents And Teachers written by Carol Vincent Research Fellow in Education Policy, University of Warwick. and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-08 with Education categories.

This work examines the factors that shape and influence home-school relations. At its heart is an analysis of parent-teacher relationships in an inner city borough, drawn from case studies of five primary schools and a parents' centre. Interviews with parents are revealing windows into parents' views on a range of issues, including curriculum, discipline and parents' relationships with their children's teachers.; The author also considers teachers' perspectives on these matters, and explores the influence of social class, ethnicity and gender on parent-teacher interactions. While presenting these issues within a consideration of broader themes such as citizenship, community, power and participation, the book discusses the reasons why initiatives designed to improve home- school relations appear to result in such limited change.

This book centers directly impacted Black children who have lived through parental incarceration. Their stories are told from holistic perspectives incorporating the full range of collateral consequences. Shifting from the Eurocentric and capitalistic viewpoint, they move us beyond negative outcomes to a positive prism by providing insider perspective, strategy, advice, and compelling experiences. We center Black children of incarcerated parents’ (BCOIP’s) rich narratives to show how they are conscious thinkers with perspectives that can help reimagine all Black children’s lives and futures. These stories help readers better understand the importance of exploring the revolutionary ways BCOIP continue to survive, thrive, and transform amid the dynamic challenges surrounding mass incarceration. The book shifts the social dialogue from fear of intergenerational crime and incarceration to resilience, success, Black joy, and self-love, and moves from sympathetic into an empathetic agenda. The book brings to the forefront counter-storytelling through oral narratives that fill a gap in literature that leaves out the voices of children of incarcerated parents who are doctors, lawyers, professional athletes, musicians, community leaders, activists, professors, teachers, bestselling authors, and much more. These are vital experiences to share because not all BCOIP will end up in prison, jail, or a detention center. Black Children of Incarcerated Parents Speak Truth to Power will be of great interest to scholars from the humanistic social sciences and humanities. It is also a timely resource for students (high school, undergraduate, and graduate) in sociology, criminology, corrections, humanities, social work, counseling, education, social justice, and related courses, as well as agency administrators, community organizations servicing families of the incarcerated, specifically incarcerated parents and the children of incarcerated parents, themselves.

Parents, Personalities and Power: Welsh-medium Schools in South-east Wales is the first volume ever published to investigate in depth the interdependent influences on the phenomenal growth of such schools over the last half century. Derived from a sustained research investigation based in the School of Welsh, Cardiff University (2003–8), the research is set within a constantly evolving linguistic, social and political society. The authors underline the international interest in the sustainable and continuing growth of the Ysgolion Cymraeg, and, as the title suggests, note the various powers that have influenced the shaping of the Welsh-school movement. These reflect the increased interest in the language and identity of Wales and the future challenges these schools face.

Written by parents who have been through the US special education system, this book cuts through the jargon to provide other parents with a no-nonsense road map full of valuable first-hand insights and tried-and-tested advice. The authors clearly describe: · the special education process, including the school hierarchies parents are likely to encounter and etiquette to be aware of when dealing with school personnel · the information parents should expect to see in school evaluations and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and what to do when this information is missing or insufficient · problems parents may encounter when the needs of the school conflict with the needs of a child, including how to deal with such situations and when to seek legal advice · the importance of organizing special education documentation and establishing a 'paper trail', and how to begin this process · why transition planning is so important, and transition services parents may want to consider for their child. Demonstrating that parents really do have the power to make special education work for their child, this empowering guide is essential reading for parents of children with disabilities who are new to the special education system in the US, as well as those who feel frustrated with the system.
