They were strangers and opposites and never met, and yet they enjoyed a passionate and unusual friendship. In 1967 Dirk Bogarde, then at the height of his fame, received a letter from America from a complete stranger who had once lived in his house. Intrigued, he wrote back to her and thus began a flood of correspondence that ended with her death in 1972.Selected from Dirk Bogarde's letters, "A Particular Friendship "reveals the unexpected side of a great actor and film star: a man deeply committed to his home, witty, stringent, observant, sometimes depressed by the state of Britain or of his work but always razor-sharp with his pen. Sprinkled with reminiscences, gossip and cameo portraits of the famous, the letters are a tribute to the relationship between two exceptional people.

Particular Friendships: A Convent Memoir offers a rare glimpse inside the walls of a Roman Catholic convent in the late 1960s. The young narrator arrives with gentle visions spawned by The Sound of Music, only to encounter the harshness of life in this secretive society. Her wit, compassion, and musicality foment a rebellion against rules forbidding expressions of joy and intimacy, as she struggles between allegiance to the heart and her vow of blind obedience to flawed and abusive superiors. Recently filed lawsuits against the Church suggest that the timing could not be better for an ex-nun's memoir. Part mystery, part coming of age story, this narrative seeks neither to damn nor to exonerate but to uncover the truth.

_______________ 'An absorbing volume' - The Spectator _______________ First published in 1989, A Particular Friendship is a collection of letters following Dirk Bogarde's first four memoirs. 'London guests staying hate it. Keeps them awake all night they complain. The bleating in the utter stillness. I heal with it, as you did.' This epistolary collection finds Bogarde at his most honest and touching, engaging in conversation with a woman he has never met and whose only interest in him comes from the simple fact that he now happens to live in a house that she once owned. These letters provide an insight into the wit and intelligence of a great man without the stifling constraints of other literary forms. It presents us with a platform and a relationship that allows Bogarde to freely reminisce, discuss politics, gossip about those around him and provide razor-sharp cameo portraits of the famous. The correspondences were all written before Bogarde saw himself as an author and stand as a testament to his literary talent, domestic sensibilities, and his unquestionable compassion in sharing so much with a complete stranger.

Justice As Friendship written by Seow Hon Tan and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-09 with Law categories.

This book explores the question of justification of law. It examines some perennial jurisprudential debates and suggests that law must find its justification in morality. Drawing upon the Aristotelian inspiration that friends have no need for justice - in (ideal) friendship, we behave justly - Seow Hon Tan develops a theory of law based on the universal phenomenon of friendship. Friendships and legal relations attract rights and obligations by virtue of the manner in which parties are situated. Friendship teaches us that how parties are situated gives rise to legitimate expectations; it attests to the intrinsic worth of each person. The methodology for deciphering norms within, and moral lessons from, friendship can be transposed to law, resulting in an inter-subjectively agreeable and rich conception of justice. In determining the content of legal rights and obligations, we can and should draw upon such determination in friendship. Justice as Friendship aims to provide a vision for law’s development and invites the practitioner to advance its central claims in their area of expertise. In dealing with selected legal doctrines, the book draws upon illustrative cases from the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Commonwealth. The book traverses the fields of jurisprudence, philosophy, ethics, political theory, contract law, and tort law.
