Excerpt from The Art of Chess-Play: A New Treatise on the Game of Chess The tone In which an author handles his subject, and the rating he bears on the ship's books by public admission, must ever be taken into consideration, in judging how far he has rightly exercised his privilege to borrow from his neigh bours, and equals only, in knowledge. The very nature Of Chess-play, like that of chemistry or mathematics, renders any treatise necessarily imperfect, unless In some measure based upon the stores and discoveries Of past and contem porary collectors. In making honourable acknowledgment of similar Obligations, it must be evident this cannot be done to the very letter, though the spirit must be ever before us.. I cannot undertake to particularize from what Chess author I take the leading move of King's Pawn two squares on commencing a game! Excerpt from The Middle Game in Chess Such an abnormal state of affairs has induced me to occupy myself for a long time with the theoretical study Of the middle game. There was no question for me, IS such a study possible? Why, I should like to know, Should that question arise? TO me the study seemed not only very desirable, but also quite necessary. My only doubt was how to begin it and how best to carry it out. Everything had to be created. There was not even a classification, which is the basis of all science; and the mass Of raw material - the endless number of annotated games - alarmed me by its immensity. AS I pursued my study, I saw very clearly that the middle game in chess is chess itself. Chess is neither the ending, which may Often be reduced to a mere arithmetical calcula tion, nor the opening, which, starting from a constant set position, develops the forces by an involuntary following of beaten paths. The middle game, I repeat, is chess itself; chess, with all its possibilities, its attacks, defences, sacrifices, etc. If, therefore, there is a theory of the game, not as a conglomeration Of different variations, but as a system of general concrete realities based on objective facts, then the theory of the middle game will present no special difficulties. Up to now no such theory has existed. The discussions with regard to the middle game were still in the air. The theory which was right for one position might be quite wrong for another. Where could be found the basis of agreement, to compel assent? Thus I came to the conclusion that it was first of all necessary to study the game of chess in general, the game founded on objective facts. From these pages we hope the reader may obtain a thorough knowledge, if not of all the Pitfalls existing on the Chessboard, at least of their principles. Pawns In The Game written by William Guy Carr and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-02-06 with Social Science categories.

Here is a true story of international intrigue, romances, corruption, graft, and political assassinations, the like of which has never been written before. It is the story of how different groups or atheistic- materialistic men have played in an international chess tournament to decide which group would win ultimate control of the wealth, natural resources, and man- power of the entire world. It is explained how the game has reached the final stage. The International Communists, and the International Capitalists, (both of whom have totalitarian ambitions) have temporarily joined hands to defeat Christian-democracy. The solution is to end the game the International Conspirators have been playing right now before one or another totalitarian-minded group imposes their ideas on the rest of mankind. The story is sensational and shocking, but it is educational because it is the TRUTH. The author offers practical solutions to problems so many people consider insoluble.

Excerpt from Amusements in Chess The conductors of the Saturday Magazine were pleased to find that their efforts to extend the knowledge of the game of Chess were signally successful. In the four years during which these articles appeared, they were frequently receiving letters on the subject from all parts of the coun try. They were pleased to find that numerous persons made their first acquaintance with Chess through the pages of the Saturday Magazine, while the Chess Problems afforded an agreeable source of amusement to the family circle, and produced many a pleasant and friendly contest as to who should be the first to solve them. The Editor was constantly receiving solutions to these problems from ladies as well as gentlemen; from the families of clergymen; from schools, and from many a solitary Chess student.
