Building on the thriving discussion on the role of attention within the phenomenological tradition, from Aron Gurwitsch and Merleau-Ponty to Bernhard Waldenfels, this book investigates the enigmatic role of attention as a faculty that enables change within subjective and intersubjective experience. The aim of the book is to reveal some characteristics of the processes in which subjects are unmade and remade, and to highlight how we are able to change our relation to an empirical world that nevertheless has unity and constancy in our perception.

Brought together, attention and drift help immerse ourselves in our surroundings and make us appreciate the contingent and pulsating relations of living. Attention and Drift suggests that instead of being antonyms, drift and attention are part of the same continuum. Attention is the opposite of being focused or fixated. Similarly, drift is not the antithesis of concentrated action, but the obverse of busyness. Within this zone of juxtaposition between attention and drift, there is also a beautiful and stark tension. There is enticement. And there is waiting. The mode of attentive drift is a poetic insinuation and a complete reorientation of our being, central to all creativity and criticism. The chief protagonists here are two immersed readers of life - George Santayana (18631952) and Stanley Cavell (19262018), whose works and ways of living highlight an involved bringing together of continuities and contingencies of life, appreciation of multiple dimensions of art and a calm display of involved critical faculties. Both seek to assess the relationships between literature, philosophy, art and religion. In each of these domains the two of them celebrate attentive wandering and distractive engrossment at once. In this book we celebrate their passion, involvement, wit, no-nonsense critical acumen and most of all, their ability to love the serendipities of life and creation.

This book presents the first ecocritical study of novelist, philosopher, poet and public intellectual Iris Murdoch (1919–1999). It brings her love of the natural world into the light, arguing for its critical significance when Murdoch conveys an awareness of intricately interconnected ecologies through her work: an awareness that anticipates the motivations and concerns of modern-day environmental humanities. The book is the first of its kind to assess some of Murdoch's poems, seen as early articulation of the environmental imagination that finds recurrent expression in her novels, philosophical writings and personal journals throughout her writing life. This book offers a significant entry point for a new research direction in Murdoch studies by explicating her unique perspective on the natural world.

The Ethics Of Attention written by Silvia Caprioglio Panizza and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-07 with Philosophy categories.
This book draws on Iris Murdoch’s philosophy to explore questions related to the importance of attention in ethics. In doing so, it also engages with Murdoch’s ideas about the existence of a moral reality, the importance of love, and the necessity but also the difficulty, for most of us, of fighting against our natural self-centred tendencies. Why is attention important to morality? This book argues that many moral failures and moral achievements can be explained by attention. Not only our actions and choices, but the possibilities we choose among, and even the meaning of what we perceive, are to a large extent determined by whether we pay attention, and what we attend to. In this way, the book argues that attention is fundamental, though often overlooked, in morality. While the book’s discussion of attention revolves primarily around Murdoch’s thought, it also engages significantly with Simone Weil, who introduced the concept of attention in a spiritual context. The book also engages with contemporary debates concerning moral perception and motivation, empirical psychology, animal ethics, and Buddhist philosophy. The Ethics of Attention will be of interest to researchers and advanced students working on Iris Murdoch, Simone Weil, ethics and moral psychology, and the philosophy of attention.

The Routledge Handbook of Public Administration and Digital Governance is a comprehensive, cutting-edge guide for students, scholars, practitioners of public policy, public administration and digital governance. The book demonstrates the diverse nature of "digital government" through a series of case studies from different regions across the globe, including Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe. The book uses these cases to highlight various aspects and implications of the intersection of digital technologies and public administration. These include impact of practices and principles of public administration, the effects of particular technologies/tools and the relationship between state and citizen. The book also addresses barriers and enablers to the adoption of digital technology, with select chapters focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) in governmental contexts by leading practitioners and scholars. Rather than providing region-specific lessons, the cases identify common challenges, offering a more holistic understanding of public administration in the digital era. With contributions from both practitioners and scholars, this handbook will be a compelling resource for those researching, studying or working in public administration, public leadership, information systems, political science and other related fields.

A Strange Proximity written by Jon Foley Sherman and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-14 with Performing Arts categories.
What happens in the relationship between audience and performer? What choices are made in the space of performance about how we attend to others? A Strange Proximity examines stage presence as key to thinking about performance and ethics. It is the first phenomenological account of ethics generated from, rather than applied to, contemporary theatrical productions. The ethical possibilities of the stage, argues Jon Foley Sherman, rest not so much in its objects—the performers and the show itself—as in the “how” of attending to others. A Strange Proximity is a unique perspective on the implications of attention in performance.
