Excerpt from A Philosophy of Therapeutics It is always expected that an author will give some reason for his work. My object in submitting this effort to the medical profession is because I believe such a work is needed. In what may be found herein all intention of hypercriticism of any special school of medicine is disclaimed. The author believes the time has come for an understanding between the various schools and sects in medicine; for the throwing down of all artificial and illogical barriers between thoughtful, scientific men who are really searching for truth. This does not mean that any school or sect should become subservient to or be absorbed to extinction by another; but it does mean that the medical profession as a whole should be too broad to allow petty theories and intolerance to separate brothers in a common cause. Of course I refer especially to the differences of views existing between the two chief divisions of the medical profession, the elder or "allopathic" school and the younger or "homoeopathic" school. This book presents an account and defense of Wittgenstein's later philosophy emphasizing its therapeutic character. Peterman argues that any therapeutic philosophy must present an account of human health, a related account of the mechanisms of health and illness, and finally an account of how philosophy can bring someone from a state of illness to health. In light of this general model, he presents an interpretation of Wittgenstein's therapeutic project that emphasizes the continuity between it and the earlier ethical project of the Tractatus. The book confronts the problem of continuity by arguing that the earlier ethical goal of coming into agreement with the world as such is replaced in the later views by the therapeutic goal of coming into agreement with forms of life. In the course of the argument, Peterman challenges standard interpretations of Wittgenstein's project and standard modes of criticizing and defending it. The book also contributes to contemporary philosophical discussion by showing why we should take seriously the project of philosophical therapy.
