A brief summary of photon-electron scattering experiments is presented, and comments made regarding their application to plasma diagnostics. The general field of gas discharge afterglow studies is reviewed, and a summary of recent experimental studies of helium afterglow is presented. A photon-electron scattering apparatus was used to perform experiments indicating the feasibility of afterglow studies using the Thomson scattering method. An impure helium discharge afterglow having properties which make it difficult to diagnose by other means was studied using laser scattering. The afterglow was also examined spectroscopically, and the results are compared. Unexpected phenomena which have been called induced luminosity and giant scattering were observed. The former is superficially like the radiation enhancement reported by Rose, Lidsky, and Thompson, but there are substantial differences. The observed effects appear to arise from hydrocarbon impurities in the gas. (Author).

During the first half of 1994, a number of the diagnostic systems for measurement of the charged-particle beam parameters throughout the subsystems of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) have been installed and tested. The particle beams eventually will involve 450-MeV to 7-GeV positrons and with different pulse formats. The first test and commissionin results for beam profiles, beam position monitors, loss rate monitors, current monitors, and synchrotron radiation photon monitors hve been obtained using 200- to 350-MeV electron beams injected into the subsystems. Data presented are principally from the transport lines and the positron accumulator ring.

A self-amplified spontaneously emitting (SASE) free-electron laser (FEL) for the visible-to-ultraviolet spectral range is under construction at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. The amplifier part of the FEL consists of twelve identical 2.7-meter-long sections. Each section includes a 2.4-meter-long, 33-mm-period hybrid undulator, a quadruple lens, and a set of electron beam and radiation diagnostics equipment. The undulatory will operate at a fixed magnetic gap (approx. 9.3 mm) with K=3.1. The electron beam position will be monitored using capacitive beam position monitors, YAG scintillators with imaging optics, and secondary emission detectors. The spatial distribution of the photon beam will be monitored by position sensitive detectors equipped with narrow-band filters. A high-resolution spectrograph will be used to observe the spectral distribution of the FEL radiation.
