This volume of five noh translations (containing an introduction, translations, short commentaries and a glossary) differs from most others in that none of the plays are of the mugenno type, but are instead genzaino, real-life noh. The plays focus on living characters rather than spirits or ghosts, and on dramatic action rather than poetry, song and dance. In addition the five noh satisfy several of the most important features of Aristotle's definition of good tragedy. That is, they all have plot, which Aristotle says in his Poetics is the imitation of action. The plot centers on characters who are related to each other or are a part of the same household. In each plot, a fatal or harmful event is either enacted or threatened, and there is an unexpected change in the direction of the action. In Shun'ei, a father, visited by his son, is pardoned from a death sentence; in Dampu, a son visits his father, who is then executed, and upon avenging his father's death, unexpectedly escapes the killer's henchmen; in Shichikiochi and Nakamitsu, a son thought to have been killed turns up alive, much to the amazement of his father; and finally, in Nishikido, a brother turns on his own brother and attacks with military force. This volume is intended to provide the reader with a translation of noh plays that either have not been previously translated into English or have not been translated for a long time. The translations are as faithful as possible to the original Japanese so that the reader can gain a close glimpse of the language and action of this particular type of noh. It is a noh filled with action compared to many that have been translated, a noh that appealed to the public at large during the medieval period. Bibliography and scholarly notes are kept to a minimum.

Excerpt from A Study of Piety in the Greek Tragic Chorus An interesting comparison is afforded by two plays in this list bearing curiously enough the same name, but dealing with different subjects, viz., the Supplices of Aeschylus and the Suppliants of Euripides, usually so translated to avoid con fusion, but both entitled 'ixénbeg in the Greek. How much more effective does Aeschylus render his play by entitling it the Suppliants rather than the Danaides!7 This, the earliest extant specimen of Greek tragedy,8 is so replete with the spirit of piety, that it may almost be described as one long continuous prayer. The title Danaides would doubtless have failed to suggest to the spectators any religious association; in fact, they would instinctively recall the well-known story of the daughters of Danaus who murdered their cousin-husbands and thereby suffered dire punishment in Hades; and this popular conception, which doubtless fostered an unsympathetic atti tude toward the Danaids, was just what Aeschylus sought to counteract at the outset, for the Supplices forms the first play of a trilogy of which the two ensuing parts are lost. In this play we see most clearly the dithyrambic origin of tragedy. The chorus constitute an indispensable element, a sine qua non, while the actors' réle is decidedly subordinate. In no other tragedy do we find such prominence assigned to the chorus. With the development of tragedy, however, as seen in the works of Sophocles and Euripides, the function of the chorus, as is well known, gradually dwindled in importance, while that of the actors correspondingly increased. The dramatic element, stimulated in proportion to the possibilities of the plot, became the chief object of interest; so that we find in certain plays of Euripides that the chorus had little or nothing to do with the vital action. "This study examines the genre of tragedy through the lens of one of its most curious manifestations: the martyr play. The equation of Christianity with tragedy has often been seen by literary and theological scholars as specious at best, sacrilegious at worst. During the mid-seventeenth century, however, a group of French playwrights saw fit to produce tragedies that drew not on Roman or Greek mythology, as was the norm, but on stories of Christian heroism. The author examines a broad corpus of plays ranging from the famous works of Pierre Corneille to near-forgotten examples of female-authored tragedy. By setting the martyr plays in direct juxtaposition with contemporary Church practice and thought, the author unearths a network of interconnections that challenge the oft-cited secularization of the stage in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on the writings of Michel Foucault as well as a host of contemporary and modern-day theologians, the author shows the martyr to be a major figure in theatrical performance and religious thought alike, exposing the porosity of the boundary separating the spaces of theatrical performance and church worship. The martyr plays, whether they threaten to destabilize the genre or define it, are ultimately shown to be integral to our understanding of what constituted tragedy in early modern France"--
