When the Chinese communists came to power in 1949, they moved to reestablish their "traditional" borders and in 1959 annexed Tibet. Most monasteries were closed, nomads were moved onto communes, the nobility were stripped of privileges, forests were cut, roads were paved, military airfields were constructed, and Tibet's communication with the outside world was cut off. A Portrait of Lost Tibet provides rare documentary photographs of traditional Tibetan life as it had been lived for countless generations before the radical disruption effected by the Chinese takeover. Rosemary Jones Tung's text describes the culture Ilya Tolstoy and Brooke Dolan found during their ten-month trek across Tibet in 1942. Tung has selected 131 photographs from the two thousand taken during their expedition. Tibet has long fascinated the West, but what really lies beyond our romantic image of a mystical mountain kingdom of peace and spirituality? Patrick French set out to discover the truth, and his extraordinary account has been widely acclaimed. Travelling through the country, French meets exiled monks, nomads and a nun secretly fighting Chinese rule, but also young Tibetans with a more pragmatic attitude to their situation. Interweaving these encounters with little-known stories of war and turmoil from Tibet's past, he reveals a more nuanced, fascinating and surprising picture of this complex place than any other book has done.

Caught in a violent storm and blown far off their intended course, five American airmen--flying the dangerous Himalayan supply route known as "The Hump"--were forced to bail out just seconds before their plane ran out of fuel. To their astonishment, they found they had landed in the heart of Tibet. There they had to confront what, to them, seemed a bizarre--even alien--people. At the same time, they had to extricate themselves from the political turmoil that even then was raging around Tibet's right to be independent from China. Now back in print, Lost in Tibet is an extraordinary story of high adventure that sheds light on the remarkable Tibetan people, just at the moment when they were coming to terms with a hostile outside world.

Tibet In Exile written by Jane Perkins and has been published by Didier Millet,Csi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with History categories.

Tibet has been a land shrouded in medievalism and mysticism for centuries, ruled from the fabled Potala Palace by the reincarnation of a god-king, the Dalai Lama. Incredible accounts from the earliest explorers recount tales of lamas levitating to change mind and matter, of yogis meditating in mountain caves without sleep or sustenance for years, and of shamans blowing human thighbone horns to stop hail or bring rain have established Tibet in the curious eyes of the outside world as a fantastical Himalayan Shangri La. Whether myth or reality, this Tibet no longer exists. With the Chinese communist invasion of 1950 came the end of a unique and timeless culture and lifestyle. Within less than 30 years, the majority of the countrys population had been forced from their homes. Dispersing across the world, especially into India, they carried with them the very culture and traditions that today are in danger of being obliterated by the ruling majority of China. Tibet In Exile is a photographic record of life for the Dalai Lama and his people in exile. The introductory text traces the history of Tibet and is illustrated with valuable historic photographs. The internationally renowned Magnum photographer Raghu Rai has compiled a unique pictorial essay on the Tibetan refugees and their leader in India. A decade has passed since the first edition was published. This new edition of Tibet in Exile features an update on the leader and his proud people, revealing the vibrancy and continuity of the Tibetan community outside of China, and communicating its enormous importance to world culture.

The once-in-a-lifetime experience of personally meeting with the Dalai Lama changed author Gaby Naher's life and started her on a personal pilgrimage to meet Tibet's second most renowned lama, the 17th Karmapa. In "Journey to Tibet's Lost Lama," Naher invites readers to join her journey far into the mountains of Northern India for a meeting with the young spiritual leader who is forced by Sino-Indian politics to live in a deserted monastery as a prisoner in all but name. Along the way, Naher paints a vivid portrait of the multifaceted backdrop to the boy's life by skillfully weaving together the life story of the boy lama, the biographies of the previous 16, and the recent history of Tibet. Full of intrigue, drama, and miracle, the story reads like colorful fiction yet holds the pain and hope of truth.

This full-color portrait of Tibetan life in exile displays the spirit of Tibetan refugees living in the beautiful mountain settings of northern India and shows how they have preserved the best of their unique culture and identity. Aided by their Buddhist faith, the Tibetan people have rebuilt productive lives for themselves, and today live in thriving communities with a strong sense of purpose: to preserve and maintain the ancient Buddhist tradition which forms the core of Tibetan culture. In this sense, these refugees have managed more than mere survival; they have created a Tibet in exile that is in many ways more truly Tibetan than their occupied homeland. These images portray skilled Tibetan artists creating paintings, statues, and woodcarvings, Tibetan doctors with their herbal remedies and pulse diagnoses, opera singers, young Tibetan children and lay people in their daily lives, monks and nuns engaging in study and practice, examples of Tibetan architecture, and majestic mountain scenes.
