The Flemish artist Francois Balthazar Solvyns, who lived in Calcutta from 1791 to 1803, is little known, but his collection of etchings of the Hindus provide a rich and compelling portrait of India two hundred years ago. These remarkable prints, depicting the people of Bengal in their occupations, festivals, and daily life, and the accompanying descriptive text, are only available in rare book collections and have rarely been referred to by scholars of Indian culture and history. In Part I of this lavishly illustrated volume, Robert Hardgrave introduces Solvyn's life and work. Part II reproduces Solvyn's etchings and descriptions, with Hardgrave's detailed commentary. This book will make these invaluable images and writings generally available for the first time. It will be an important resource for those in South Asian studies and well as those interested in European artists in India and the European representation of the "other."

In this bold, illuminating and superbly readable study, India’s foremost psychoanalyst and cultural commentator Sudhir Kakar and anthropologist Katharina Kakar investigate the nature of ‘Indian-ness’. What makes an Indian recognizably so to the rest of the world, and, more importantly, to his or her fellow Indians? For, as the authors point out, despite ethnic differences that are characteristic more of past empires than modern nation states, there is an underlying unity in the great diversity of India that needs to be recognized. Looking at what constitutes a common Indian identity, the authors examine in detail the predominance of family, community and caste in our everyday lives, our attitudes to sex and marriage, our prejudices, our ideas of the other (explored in a brilliant chapter on Hindu-Muslim conflict), and our understanding of health, right and wrong, and death. In the final chapter, they provide fascinating insights into the Indian mind, shaped largely by the culture’s dominant, Hindu world view. Drawing upon three decades of original research and sources as varied as the Mahabharata, the Kamasutra, the writings of Mahatma Gandhi, Bollywood movies and popular folklore, Sudhir and Katharina Kakar have produced a rich and revealing portrait of the Indian people.

Eastern Light In Western Eyes written by Marty Glass and has been published by Sophia Perennis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-03 with Religion categories.

Marty Glass lives with his wife Carol beyond the power and water lines in Humboldt County, California, relying on his 1965 pick-up truck "Old Brown" to take him the final two miles up a dirt road to his owner-built home. He has worked as a college English instructor, wharehouseman, and janitor. A devoted father of five children, loving husband and neighbor, he now teaches sixth grade in a rural elementary school, and plays jazz piano and cards. For the past thirty years, he has seriously practiced the religion of India, spending the long necessary hours meditating in "Marty's Cell," an old chicken coop reborn as an austere shrine. His spiritual practice is his real life. Marty's acclaimed book Yuga: An Anatomy of our Fate, was published by Sophia Perennis in 2001. He now gives us perhaps his most beautiful and thoughtful gift, reminding us that the world is woven of the infinite Love and Joy that is God, and showing us how, inspired by the Hindu tradition, that Love and Joy can be directly experienced as the heart of the universe and the heart of our hearts. We have it from Frithjof Schuon (The Transcendent Unity of Religions) and many others that the Vedanta appears among explicit doctrines as one of the most direct formulations possible of what makes the very essence of our spiritual reality. The work in hand can be read as a book-length unpacking of that accurate description. Reliable from beginning to end, it is distinctive among the innumerable renditions of the Vedanta in two ways. First, because its author is an accomplished wordsmith, he makes the Vedanta's profundities-which delve as deep as those of any philosophical theology-read like an open book; and second, because he has worked for thirty years to shape his life by those profundities, his vivid accounts of what he experienced along the way make his words jump off the page into the reader's heart. The book is inspiring. Huston Smith, author of Why Religion Matters, The World's Religions, etc.

Hinduism And The Religious Arts written by Heather Elgood and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-04-01 with Religion categories.

The roots between the Hindu religion and the wider culture are deep and uniquely complex. No study of either ancient or contemporary Indian culture can be undertaken without a clear understanding of Hindu visual arts and their sources in religious belief and practice. Defining what is meant by religion - no such term exists in Sanskrit - and what is understood by Hindu ideals of beauty, Heather Elgood provides the best synthesis and critical study of recent scholarship on the topic. In addition, this book offers critical background information for anyone interested in the social and anthropological roots of artistic creativity, as well as the rites, practices and beliefs of the hundreds of millions of Hindus in the world today.

A new and illuminating portrait of one of the greatest figures of the twentieth century. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi has been the subject of over a dozen well-regarded biographies, yet key aspects of the man still prove elusive. In this book, Rajmohan Gandhi, a grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and an acclaimed biographer and scholar, attempts to understand the phenomenon that was Gandhi. This he does by examining in detail dominant and varied themes of Gandhi's life"his unsuccessful bid to keep India united, his attitude towards caste and untouchability; his relationship with those whose empire he challenged; his controversial experiments with chastity; his views on God, truth and non-violence; and his selection of heirs to lead a new-born nation. For a generation growing up on images of a simplified Father of the Nation and apostle of non-violence frozen in statues or reduced to a few predictable strokes of an artist's pen, this biography offers a rewarding insight into the man, his victories and his defeats.

Originally published in 1952, the first part of this book gives a portrait of Akbar (1542-1605), Emperor of India, not as a War Lord and Empire Builder, but as a man deeply absorbed in questions of the Spirit. It follows him in his quest after the various religions professed in India and the doctrines of the Christian faith. The text is illustrated by numerous reproductions of contemporary miniatures. Their style which, under Akbar’s inspiring patronage, resulted from the collaboration of Muslim and Hindu artists who became acquainted with European paintings, reflects the universality of the Emperor’s mind. The second part of the book is concerned with the rise and development of this style.

Excerpt from Hindu Manners, Customs and Ceremonies IN the Library of the Madras Literary Society and Auxiliary of the Royal Asiatic Society may be seen, in a conspicuous position above one of the doorways, a striking portrait in oil-colours. This portrait at a distance one takes to be that of some Hindu, clothed in white, wearing a white turban, and holding in one hand the bamboo staff that tradition assigns to a Hindu pilgrim. A closer inspection, however, shows that in reality it is the portrait of a European, albeit the face is so tanned, and so furrowed with the lines of age and thought, that the first impression that one receives of it is not easily dispelled. It is a face that literally speaks to you from the canvas. The broad forehead, the well-shaped but somewhat prominent nose, the firm but kindly mouth, and above all the marvellously intelligent eyes, all bespeak a man of no common mould. Whoever the artist was (and I have not been able to discover his name or the circumstances which led to his executing the work), there can be no doubt that he has succeeded in depicting a countenance that is full of character; while as a back ground to his picture he has painted a low range of bare, rugged hills that seem to be in thorough keeping with his subject, and to suggest, as a kind of inspiration, the hard, self-denying, but solid life-work of him whose features he has handed down.
