The Steam Engine: A Practical Guide to the Construction, Operation, and Care of Steam Engines, Steam Turbines, and Their Accessories - Volume One is a work originally published by The American School of Correspondence and co-authored by Walter B. Snow and Walter S. Leland. The intent of the book is to introduce the great advances in steam power to the masses through a detailed but introductory description of a modern technology (at the time of writing) that would impact the lives of many. The Steam Engine is primarily intended for the enthusiast interested in steam power. The book begins with a detailed description of the steam engine, including the history of its development, a thorough examination of important engine parts, and an overview of the different types of steam engine. From there, the book progresses into a more focused discussion of engine operation and engine room accessories, including a vital section highlighting the importance of lubrication. The thermodynamics of the steam engine are then outlined, in what is probably the densest portion of the book. The text concludes with a look at the steam turbine, primarily focusing on its operation. The language included throughout is basic. The authors have intentionally excluded complicated mathematical theories in order to make this book approachable for the non-specialist. While some technical knowledge is certainly beneficial to reader's of The Steam Engine, one need not be an engineer in order to understand the principles discussed. As a practical guide to a complex technology, The Steam Engine is a great success. Enthusiasts will surely delight in the depth of information contained within this book, all of it presented in an easy to digest fashion. If you are at all interested in steam power, Snow and Leland's book is sure to please. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. When installed and operated properly, general purpose steam turbines are reliable and tend to be forgotten, i.e., out of sound and out of mind. But, they can be sleeping giants that can result in major headaches if ignored. Three real steam turbine undesirable consequences that immediately come to mind are: Injury and secondary damage due to an overspeed failure. An overspeed failure on a big steam or gas turbine is one of the most frightening of industrial accidents. The high cost of an extensive overhaul due to an undetected component failure. A major steam turbine repair can cost ten or more times that of a garden variety centrifugal pump repair. Costly production loses due an extended outage if the driven pump or compressor train is unspared. The value of lost production can quickly exceed repair costs. A major goal of this book is to provide readers with detailed operating procedure aimed at reducing these risks to minimal levels. Start-ups are complicated by the fact that operators must deal with numerous start-up scenarios, such as: Commissioning a newly installed steam turbine Starting ups after a major steam turbine repair Starting up a proven steam turbine after an outage Overspeed trip testing It is not enough to simply have a set of procedures in the control room for reference. To be effective, operating procedures must be clearly written down, taught, and practiced—until they become habit.

When it was first published some two decades ago, the original Handbook of Lubrication and Tribologystood on technology's cutting-edge as the first comprehensive reference to assist the emerging science of tribology lubrication. Later, followed by Volume II, Theory and Design and Volume III, Monitoring, Materials, Synthetic Lubricants, and Applications, it has continued to serve as the cornerstone of every tribology and lubrication science library, providing engineers, researchers, and technicians with the information they need to do their work and pioneer the advancements that have dramatically reshaped this field. Now due to those advances, the time has come to retool tribology's master text. In addition to offering tribologists the facts, figures, and equations they need everyday, Volume I Application and Maintenance, Second Edition positions itself at the forefront of the field to address the latest technology related to application and maintenance procedures, as well as changes in our understanding of how lubrication principles impact implementation. Completely reorganized to aid the reader in identifying chapters and topics of interest, every one of the chapters retained from the first edition has either been fully updated and revised, or completely rewritten by a peer-recognized team of experts who are currently active in a wide variety of industry segments. With the addition of several new subject areas, it now boasts a total of 37 chapters.
