This book introduces readers to the theory of practice architectures and conveys a way of approaching practice theory through developing a practice sensibility. It shows that, in order to change our practices, we must also change the conditions that make those practices possible. The book draws on everyday life to illustrate how we can see the world by watching it unfold in practices: it argues that life happens in practices. The theory of practice architectures takes the ontological nature of practices seriously by recognising that practices take place in the real world. Consequently, the book offers a new perspective on how practices happen amidst a vast world of happenings; on how we participate in the “happening-ness” of the world through our practices. It invites us to consider whether our practices reproduce or aggravate the contemporary environmental crises confronting the Earth, and whether we can transform our current practices to ameliorate these crises. This thesis examines the literature of three authors who were widely read in Britain during the 1740s, at the advent of what Northrop Frye defined as "An Age of Sensibility." This work-which comprises moral and medical treatises, poetry, a novel, and popular essays---defined itself by a subtle yet unmistakable linking of imaginative experience with certain emotional states, effectively idealizing specific codes of conduct. Sensibility is generally and rightly regarded as the literary expression of new philosophical paradigms, but by examining the early works of David Hume, a celebrated poem titled The Art of Preserving Health by the physician John Armstrong, and Samuel Richardson's tragic novel Clarissa, this thesis argues that the emergence of sensibility also challenged readers to examine the moral meaning of their aesthetic experience. Each of these authors suggested not only that emotions were necessary for cultivating moral feelings, but each also implied that the key to such cultivation lay in the modeling of the very emotions that they sought to arouse. Hume's manner of emotional modeling was the most speculative, presenting his own "philosophical melancholy and delirium" while teaching that powerful aesthetic experiences reveal certain moral problems; Armstrong was the most descriptive, using the classical georgic to depict the knowing physician as a feeling patient, thereby challenging his Newtonian colleagues to recognize that emotional self-consciousness can prevent disease; and Richardson was the most evocative, writing, revising, and "restoring" his vast novel to draw his readers so completely into the feelings of his characters that they would emerge from their reading in the manner of the reformed rake John Belford, purged of vice and devoted to virtue. Each of these authors also described their ideal readers in their works, which assumed a certain readiness among the reading public to respond positively to their techniques. Recent approaches have defined eighteenth-century sensibility as replies to learned paradigms, or as stylistic innovations designed to mirror emotional states. This thesis focuses instead on the authors' intellectual and stylistic background, as well as their professional ambitions, to argue that literary sensibility originated as an aesthetic instrument of moral as well as philosophical concerns.

The four novelists in my dissertation can be linked to form an alternative literary history of sensibility---"alternative" because it differs from existing accounts of the fate of the sentimental novel, but also because sensibility can be understood as an alternative to dominant modes of reading and writing narrative. Through close readings of A Sentimental Journey, Persuasion, Jane Eyre, Jacob's Room, and The Waves, I show that these writers implicitly distinguish between a practice of narrative representation based on "sympathy" and a quite different textual practice of "sensibility." "Sympathy" is presented as a mimetic dynamic that promotes identification while maintaining hierarchical differences between categories or individuals. Like the socio-symbolic systems they reflect and support, sympathetic representations channel desire into dialectical configurations which promote the treatment of others as objects and the inability to recognize difference except as a negative quality in relation to the self-same. Recently, such "sympathetic" processes have been effectively critiqued: psychoanalysis has been used to examine the ways narrative structures reproduce hegemonic patterns of identification and "othering." Yet psychoanalysis has been less successful in permitting critics to recognize alternative images of difference, sexuality, and the functions of representation. Drawing on works by Deleuze, Lingis, Bersani, and Cixous, I argue that these novelists use techniques suggested by the genre of sentimental fiction to resist sympathy and to redefine sensibility as a sexual sensitivity to phenomenal divergences and disjunctions that communicate sensory or affective intensity. The practice of sensibility developed in and by their novels is less mimetic than "performative": by reshaping the temporal and sexual dynamics of reading, it cultivates the reader's ability to recognize "singularities" (differential features, forces, capacities and relations which defy symbolization). Beginning with Laurence Sterne's reweaving of the relations between the sensory, the textual, and the sexual, I use Gilles Deleuze's theory of dynamic repetition to show how Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, and Virginia Woolf inherit sensibility as a literary potential: a mode of writing that haunts history like an unanswered question, returning to be re-worked and re-solved within the specific contexts of each historical period.

Founded in 1676 during a cosmopolitan early modern period, Mindröling monastery became a key site for Buddhist education and a Tibetan civilizational center. Its founders sought to systematize and institutionalize a worldview rooted in Buddhist philosophy, engaging with contemporaries from across Tibetan Buddhist schools while crystallizing what it meant to be part of their own Nyingma school. At the monastery, ritual performance, meditation, renunciation, and training in the skills of a bureaucrat or member of the literati went hand in hand. Studying at Mindröling entailed training the senses and cultivating the objects of the senses through poetry, ritual music, monastic dance, visual arts, and incense production, as well as medicine and astrology. Dominique Townsend investigates the ritual, artistic, and cultural practices inculcated at Mindröling to demonstrate how early modern Tibetans integrated Buddhist and worldly activities through training in aesthetics. Considering laypeople as well as monastics and women as well as men, A Buddhist Sensibility sheds new light on the forms of knowledge valued in early modern Tibetan societies, especially among the ruling classes. Townsend traces how tastes, values, and sensibilities were cultivated and spread, showing what it meant for a person, lay or monastic, to be deemed well educated. Combining historical and literary analysis with fieldwork in Tibetan Buddhist communities, this book reveals how monastic institutions work as centers of cultural production beyond the boundaries of what is conventionally deemed Buddhist.
