Private associations organized around a common cult, occupation, ethnic identity, neighborhood or family were among the principal means of organizing social and economic life in the ancient Mediterranean. They offered opportunities for sociability, cultic activities, mutual support and contexts in which to display and recognize virtuous achievement. This volume collects 140 inscriptions and papyri from Ptolemaic and early Roman Egypt, along with translations, notes, commentary, and analytic indices. The dossier of association-related documents substantially enhances our knowledge of the extent, activities, and importance of private associations in the ancient Mediterranean, since papyri, unavailable from most other locations in the Mediterranean, preserve a much wider range of data than epigraphical monuments. The dossier from Egypt includes not only honorific decrees, membership lists, bylaws, dedications, and funerary monuments, but monthly accounts of expenditures and income, correspondence between guild secretaries and local officials, price and tax declarations, records of legal actions concerning associations, loan documents, petitions to local authorities about associations, letters of resignation, and many other papyrological genres. These documents provide a highly variegated picture of the governance structures and practices of associations, membership sizes and profiles, and forms of interaction with the State.

The excavations of the Athenian Agora have played a major role in bringing to light the rich sculptural legacy of ancient Athens. The project's storerooms boast one of the most important bodies of sculpture from classical antiquity, covering the complete range and history of output in a storied center of artistic production. Adela Yarbro Collins is the Buckingham Professor of New Testament Criticism and Interpretation at the Yale University Divinity School. She was Professor of New Testament in the faculty of the University of Chicago Divinity School from 1991 to 2000; Professor in the Department of Theology at the University of Notre Dame from 1985 to 1991; and a member of the faculty of McCormick Theological Seminary from 1973 to 1985. She holds the Ph.D. from Harvard University in New Testament and Christian Origins and was awarded an honorary doctorate in Theology by the University of Oslo, Norway, in 1994. Professor Collins was awarded a Fellowship for University Teachers by the National Endowment for the Humanities for 1995-96. In addition to her first book, The Combat Myth in the Book of Revelation, she has published Cosmology and Eschatology in Jewish and Christian Apocalypticism; The Beginning of the Gospel: Probings of Mark in Context, Crisis and Catharsis: The Power of the Apocalypse, and The Apocalypse (New Testament Message series). Her current research project is a commentary on the Gospel according to Mark for the Hermeneia commentary series. Professor Collins is serving as a member of the Committee of the Society of New Testament Studies and as the delegate of the Society of Biblical Literature to the American Council of Learned Societies. She was the Editor of the Society of Biblical Literature's Monograph Series from 1985-1990. This book investigates Hellenistic popular religion through an interdisciplinary study of terracotta figurines of Egyptian deities, mostly from domestic contexts, from the trading port of Delos. A comparison of the figurines’ iconography to parallels in Egyptian religious texts, temple reliefs, and ritual objects suggests that many figurines depict deities or rituals associated with Egyptian festivals. An analysis of the objects’ clay fabrics and manufacturing techniques indicates that most were made on Delos. Additionally, archival research on unpublished notes from early excavations reveals new data on many figurines’ archaeological contexts, illuminating their roles in both domestic and temple cults. The results offer a new perspective on Hellenistic reinterpretations of Egyptian religion, as well as the relationship between “popular” and “official” cults.

This is an exciting time to study in Athens. The “rescue” excavations of recent years, conducted during construction of the Metro system and in preparation for the 2004 Olympics Games, combined with major restoration projects and a new enthusiasm for fresh examination of old material, using new techniques and applications, brings new perspectives and answers on many aspects of the ancient city of Athens and life, politics and religion in Attica. The 15 papers presented here contribute new findings that result from intensive, firsthand examinations of the archaeological and epigraphical evidence. They illustrate how much may be gained by reexamining material from older excavations, and from the methodological shift from documenting information to closer analysis and larger historical reflection.
