It strives to tell simply and clearly a few things, and to bring prominently before the reader only the greatest literary names. The author has found that young readers get very little from a book which presupposes wide knowledge on their part, or which deals with elabo rate literary criticism. Much reading is done in the schools, however, and it is necessary to give pupils some chronological idea of the growth of literature and the place of authors. It is the pur pose of this book to supply that chronology in form somewhat fuller than an outline, and yet less bulky than the regular histories. While it gives no new point of view or illuminating criticisms, it hopes to meet the need of all classes of students who wish to acquire in a straightforward way the gen erally accepted facts of English literary history. Excerpt from An Outline Sketch of English Literature In so brief a history of so rich a literature, the problem is how to get room enough to give, not an adequate impression - that is impossible - but any impression at all of the subject. To do this I have crowded out every thing but belles lettres. Books in philosophy, history, science, etc., however important in the history of English thought, receive the merest incidental mention, or even no mention at all. Again, I have omitted the literature of the Anglo-Saxon period, which is written in a language nearly as hard for a modern Englishman to read as German is, or Dutch. Caedmon and Cynewulf are no more a part of English literature than Vergil and Horace are of Italian. I have also left out the vernacular literature of the Scotch before the time of Burns. Up to the date of the union Scotland was a separate kingdom, and its literature had a development independent of the English, though parallel with it. In dividing the history into periods, I have followed, with some modifications, the divisions made by Mr. Stopford Brooke in his excellent little Primer of English Literature. Excerpt from A Treasury of English Literature But, beyond these aims, it is hoped that the present book may fill a place as an English anthology representing more fully than has yet been attempted in a brief selection, the course of our literature (with the exception of the Drama) from the earliest time to the eighteenth century; and a special feature has been made of Old and Middle English writings before the time of Chaucer. The Treasury forms a complete work in it self and can be used apart from its connexion with the Primer of English Literature. No extracts from the Drama proper have been included, except in one case as an example of Marlowe's mighty line. It seems almost impossible, from the very nature of that form of art, to represent it at all justly in brief passages. Moreover, the work of selection from our dramatic literature is being done by others at the present time, to say nothing of the classic volume of Elizabethan specimens given to us by Charles Lamb. The selections in this Treasury end with the poetry of Burns, though originally it was intended to bring them up to 1832, where the Primer itself ends. It was found, however, that this would make the book too large for its purpose, without adding much to its usefulness, since there are already many good selections from the later authors. The writers included and the order and proportionate importance assigned to them follow, as a rule, the arrangement of the Primer, though now and then an author has been represented who is not named there, or, if named, is only glanced at without distinctive criticism.
