Being the only child of a single mother, Sergio was raised by his maternal grandparents in a South Texas region better known as the Rio Grande Valley. This memoir details his upbringing as a poor migrant worker of Mexican descent having to pick crops for a living since the age of seven. As a way to break from the family cycle of picking crops and depending on government welfare programs, Sergio joined the United States Army and served ten years on active duty. He was deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina shortly after the Bosnian War only to find and deal with the aftermath of the genocide that took place there and be caught in the middle of several attacks. His experiences in Bosnia ultimately led to experiencing signs and symptoms related to PTSD. After completing ten years of military service, Sergio joined the U.S. Border Patrol. Being of Mexican descent and having family in South Texas and in Mexico gave way to new issues of having to counter threats against his family and ill-willed opinions of him for arresting and deporting "his own kind."

Excerpt from The True Story of the United States of America: Told for Young People The story of the United States of America has already been told and re-told for young Americans by competent writers, and yet there is room for another re-telling. To avoid as far as possible the dreary array of dates and the dull succession of events that may comprise the history hut do not tell the story - to awaken an interest in motives as well as persons, in principles rather than in battles, in the patriotism and manliness that make a people rather than in the simply personal qualities that make the leader or the individual, is the aim of the writer of this latest "Story." The future of the Republic depends on the upbringing of the boys and girls of to-day. Any new light on the doings of the boys and girls of America's past when they grew to manhood and womanhood should be of service to the boys and girls of America's to-day and to-morrow. The hope that this volume may help as such a light has inspired its author to write as concisely and as simply as he is able the story of the great Republic's origin, development, and growth, from the far-off days of Columbus the discoverer to the nobler times of Washington the defender and Lincoln the savior of America's liberties. It has seemed advisable, in view of the chain of events that have made the close of the nineteenth century notable years in the history of the Republic, to bring this "True Story of the United States" as nearly as possible to date, and thus include the stirring episode of the war with Spain. This new material is here thankfully offered to those young Americans who have, by their approval and appreciation, made this book so gratifying a success. May they live to be old Americans, proud of their native land, worthy of it and loyal to it, as it takes position far in the van, among the great nations of the twentieth century. This book details service learning as a most promising innovation in educational reform. The book is designed to be used as a supplement to teaching courses on Service Learning. Some forms are included to assist in designing course work. It sheds light on the relationship among the perceptions of university students regarding the impact of service learning on student leadership potential. Several types of community projects are discussed as service learning tools. These projects included literacy-based community service learning and traditional service learning experiences. Service Learning is the integration of community service with academic content of coursework that has been identified by educators as practice that will develop civic responsibility in today’s youth. This is a goal that is articulated in many college and university mission statements throughout the United States. It is clear from the book and earlier research that participation in service learning courses facilitates at least four types of student outcomes. These outcomes include: a greater sense of personal efficacy, an expanded awareness of the world, a heightened understanding of personal values, and an increased level of engagement in academic course work.

Proud American Vietnam Artillery Soldiers…Then and Now By: Terry L. Nau Told in the voices of Vietnam veterans looking back on their war, Proud Americans is an oral history of the 2nd Battalion, 32nd Field Artillery unit that served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1972. The 2/32, nicknamed the Proud Americans, fired the first 175 millimeter rounds in the Vietnam War. The unit stayed in Vietnam for seven years, refreshed by more draftees and enlisted soldiers. From rescuing other American soldiers, to the Tet Offensive, to surviving 42 days of mortar attacks, the veterans share their personal stories of service. Bonds, slow to form, became unbreakable as black, Hispanic, white, and immigrant soldiers became brothers. Proud Americans honors the sacrifices of those who never came home and those who did. Reflecting on their journeys to and from Vietnam, these veterans share an intimate view of their dangerous service.
