This qualitative study examined the changing roles and requirements for deans as educational leaders at Canadian post-secondary institutions. A content analysis approach was used to capture, code and analyze 248 job advertisements for the position of dean in Canada from 1970 to 2011. The findings show that in many cases the role of post-secondary deans as advertised in recruitment efforts is evolving to reflect the nature of service systems. With respect to the role of fundraising, only 23 job advertisements mention fundraising as either a duty that the dean would perform or as pre-requisite experience. This research points to a need to focus our communications to future educational leaders on the skills that will enable them to excel in a dynamic environment.

Philanthropy in higher education consists of gifts of financial funding from individuals, alumni, community advocates, parents, private companies, businesses, or foundations, to support a spectrum of items including scholarships, fellowships, academic programs, professorships, research, or development. In the 21st century, most public and private higher education institutions grapple with a philanthropic agenda. Although philanthropy for higher education dates back to the 1630s, it was not until the past few decades more attention was given to academic deans and their role in fundraising. Thus, there is a push for academic deans to work in tandem with the institutional advancement offices to be successful in fundraising to create institutional growth and opportunities. The purpose of this study was to understand the academic deans' role in fundraising from the perspective of the deans and to gather insights on how to better prepare academic deans for fundraising. Data were collected using a basic qualitative methodology and a series of two semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed via the constant comparative and cross-case methods of data analysis. Findings indicated that academic deans do not receive professional development in fundraising prior to being appointed dean. Therefore, professional development in fundraising is needed before becoming dean and continued during the deanship, so that academic deans can advance their fundraising practice. Academic deans cannot do all of the fundraising alone and they need to build a culture of fundraising with their development officer(s) and faculty. Academic deans are the best people to build and guide donor relationships by practicing patience and active listening while fulfilling the institution's mission. The discussion includes explication of findings, implications, limitations, and recommendations for further research.

Fundraising is a multi-billion phenomenon in American higher education. However, despite its crucial importance, it remains one of the least studied aspects of higher education. When it is studied, the studies focus heavily on donor motivation and similar tactical issues – as opposed to studying fundraising as a strategic phenomenon, a phenomenon that impacts the academic enterprise as a whole. Considering the gap between the importance of fundraising on one hand and the stagnating discussion about it in the academic literature on the other hand, there is a clear need to contribute fresh insights and generate new debates in academic research on the subject. This study seeks to do so in two ways. First, it proposes a theory-driven answer to the question of why do universities need fundraising. The proposed answer is the conceptual framework of dynamic capabilities. By introducing this new framework that treats fundraising as a strategic phenomenon, the study strengthens the foundations of the research and extends it beyond its traditional focus on donor motivation and related issues. Moreover, it connects the research to voluminous literature in the discipline of strategic management, opening up more opportunities for interdisciplinary research. Second, the study presents the findings of an exploratory qualitative study of a potential relationship between fundraising and strategy in higher education. The probe investigated three cases of major gifts to three academic institutions: a research university, an emerging research university, and a health institution. The empirical findings and the contributions resulting from them could serve as a launching pad for more empirical research in the area. Following the maxim that nothing is as useful as good theory, the study also aims to inform and inspire fundraising practitioners to consider the study’s theoretical underpinnings and empirical findings in their strategic decisions and actions. Finally, the significance of this study may go beyond fundraising. At its basic level, this is a study of the character of strategy in higher education, and of how (if at all) do academic institutions turn strategy into action. The conceptual framework and empirical findings reported in this paper may inform future research in this area.
