Naquele momento alarmante da política nacional, Jessé Souza cumpriu uma difícil tarefa: explicar como a "cultura de golpes de Estado", promovida historicamente pela elite contra as políticas públicas de inclusão dos mais pobres – como aconteceu com Getúlio Vargas e João Goulart –, estava em franca atuação sem que a população se desse conta disso. Essa indignação se descolou dos grandes protestos de 2013 para ganhar a representação, manipulada e inflada pela mídia, da "vontade popular" que tomou as ruas nos atos pró-impeachment, anos depois. A associação imediata desse descontentamento ao aparato jurídico-policial do Estado – que tinha a força-tarefa da Operação Lava Jato como testa de ferro e Sergio Moro como uma espécie de super-herói anticorrupção – devastou nossa jovem democracia e gerou um fenômeno reacionário e popular nunca antes visto na história da vida pública brasileira. A herança do golpe, portanto, não é o governo Michel Temer, como primeiramente se poderia crer. This book provides a fascinating analysis of a single jurisdiction, Brazil, and accounts for both the successes and the failures of its most recent constitutional project, inaugurated by the Constitution of 1988. It sets out the following aspects of the constitutional development and erosion: - the different phases of the promised transition from military rule to a 'social-democratic constitutionalism'; - the obstacles to democratisation derived from the absence of true institutional reforms in the judicial branch and in the civil-military relationship; - the legal and social practices which maintained a structure that obstructed the emergence of an effective social-democracy, such as the neoliberal pattern, the acceptance in the political field of unlawful organisations, such as the milícias, and the way the digital revolution has been harming the formation of democratic sovereignty. Situating Brazil in the global context of the revival of authoritarianism, it details the factors which are common to the third wave of democratisation reflux. Accounting for those aspects, particular to the Brazilian jurisdiction, it shows that there is a tension in the Brazilian constitution. On the one hand, such constitutionalism was renewed by democratic pressure on governments to undertake social politics since 1988. On the other hand, it retained authoritarian practices through the hands of diverse institutions and political actors. By exploring the ideas of constitutional erosion and collapse, as well as democratic, social and digital constitutionalism, the book presents a comparative analysis of Brazil and other jurisdictions, including the United States, South Africa, and Peru.

This book aims to reconstruct the role played by left movements and organizations in Brazil from their process of renewal in the 1980s as they fought against the civil-military dictatorship, going through the Workers' Party's governments in the 2000s, until the Party’s dramatic defeat with a parliamentary coup in 2016. Henceforth, there have been attacks on social and political rights that severely affect the lower classes and reverted progressive policies on various issues. Through a historical reconstruction, this book analyzes how different left movements and organizations contributed to the democratization of Brazilian society, and how their contradictions contributed to the actual conservative turn. The essays also focus the development of Brazilian Left in the light of socialist politics and especially Marxism, both in terms of political organizations and theory. In this sense, the essays in this collection represent an effort to rethink some aspects of the history of the Brazilian left and how it can reorganize itself after the conservative turn.
