This is a second edition of the ground- breaking volume Texts and Practices: Readings in Critical Discourse Analysis, which was the first published collection of chapters presenting critical discourse analysis theory and practice. Critical discursive approaches have now become the main trend in most discursive and semiotic investigations. It was then, and is especially now, predominantly concerned with identifying, demystifying and resisting the ways language and semiotic systems are used to reflect, create and sustain inequalities in specific contexts. This book presents an overview of revisiting the assessment of language abilities. Nations all have stories about themselves--where they came from, what it means to be a citizen of that nation, what its values are. In Myths and Sanctioned Ignorance in British Immigration Discourse, Samuel Bennett looks at British national myths about immigration and the country's colonial history. Combining Critical Discourse Studies with decolonial and postcolonial theories, Bennett offers an in-depth, methodologically rigorous analysis of a wide range of material to show how current immigration discourses are inextricably tied to the past. The book identifies four key myths: euphemization of the Commonwealth (and erasure of Britain's colonial history); immigration as both enrichment and threat; Britain offering a safe haven for those in need; and a teleological story of "British values." Intentionally moving backwards and forwards between past and the present, and across genres, Bennett shows how the myths the UK tells itself are at once stable, deployed in different contexts, and historically rooted. Ultimately, this book argues that through these myths the migrant "Other"--and, by extension, British ethnic minorities--have been silenced and erased from the country's story which legitimises a racialised immigration policy.

This book examines public, political and media discourse in the context of failed states using Lebanon, a country torn by wars and political-financial corruption, as a contemporary case study. Using critical discourse analysis (CDA), the author brings political and economic theories into dialogue with socio-linguistics to argue that public discourse in a failed state not only plays a role in that collapse but is a key presenting symptom of social disintegration. Through CDA, the book makes this phenomenon visible, and contributes to existing definitions of the concept “failed” or “fragile” state. In addition, the qualitative data and analysis provided offer a tool to assess a state’s vulnerability to collapse. The book also expands the sociolinguistic model to eavesdrop on the zeitgeist of the nation in order to examine the degrees of social cohesion, sectarianism and bonding. This book will be of interest to discourse analysts, journalists, politicians, policy-makers, and economists.

This volume contains 17 essays on the subjects of text, canon, and scribal practice. The volume is introduced by an overview of the Qumran evidence for text and canon of the Bible. Most of the text critical studies deal with texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls, including sectarian as well as canonical texts. Two essays shed light on the formation of authoritative literature. Scribal practice is illustrated in various ways, again mostly from the Dead Sea Scrolls. One essay deals with diachronic change in Qumran Hebrew. Rounding out the volume are two thematic studies, a wide-ranging study of the “ambiguous oracle” of Josephus, which he identifies as Balaam’s oracle, and a review of the use of female metaphors for Wisdom.
