Nations all have stories about themselves--where they came from, what it means to be a citizen of that nation, what its values are. In Myths and Sanctioned Ignorance in British Immigration Discourse, Samuel Bennett looks at British national myths about immigration and the country's colonial history. Combining Critical Discourse Studies with decolonial and postcolonial theories, Bennett offers an in-depth, methodologically rigorous analysis of a wide range of material to show how current immigration discourses are inextricably tied to the past. The book identifies four key myths: euphemization of the Commonwealth (and erasure of Britain's colonial history); immigration as both enrichment and threat; Britain offering a safe haven for those in need; and a teleological story of "British values." Intentionally moving backwards and forwards between past and the present, and across genres, Bennett shows how the myths the UK tells itself are at once stable, deployed in different contexts, and historically rooted. Ultimately, this book argues that through these myths the migrant "Other"--and, by extension, British ethnic minorities--have been silenced and erased from the country's story which legitimises a racialised immigration policy.

The contributors reveal how migrant identities are discursively constructed by those with lived experiences of mobility and those who view themselves as part of the 'host' population. "The People That Never Were: Linguistic Scholarship and the Invention of the Aryans takes the reader through the history of the concept Aryan, beginning with colonial scholarship in India around 1800, and ending in the first decades of the twentieth century. The book shows how Aryan emerged as a free-standing explanatory device, and a key to historical narratives of superiority and inferiority. History came to be understood as consisting of peoples or races with assigned characteristics and worldviews. The book takes apart the arguments for the existence of an Aryan race or people in ancient times, focussing in particular on the role of philologists in offering distorted readings of ancient Sanscrit texts. It shows that Aryan came into English around 1840, promoted primarily by F. Max Müller, whose own conceptual confusions subsequently were projected back onto ancient India and at the same time read into contemporary Europe. The conclusion looks at the academic debate today, notably in relation to scholarly authority and to the insider/outsider dichotomy that seemingly pits Western Indology against Hindu nationalism. It suggests that historical linguistics no less than race theory is based on a series of profound conceptual errors. (B)ordering Britain argues that Britain is the spoils of empire, its immigration law is colonial violence and irregular immigration is anti-colonial resistance. In announcing itself as postcolonial through immigration and nationality laws passed in the 60s, 70s and 80s, Britain cut itself off symbolically and physically from its colonies and the Commonwealth, taking with it what it had plundered. This imperial vanishing act cast Britain's colonial history into the shadows. The British Empire, about which Britons know little, can be remembered fondly as a moment of past glory, as a gift once given to the world. Meanwhile immigration laws are justified on the basis that they keep the undeserving hordes out. In fact, immigration laws are acts of colonial seizure and violence. They obstruct the vast majority of racialised people from accessing colonial wealth amassed in the course of colonial conquest. Regardless of what the law, media and political discourse dictate, people with personal, ancestral or geographical links to colonialism, or those existing under the weight of its legacy of race and racism, have every right to come to Britain and take back what is theirs.

The situation of Muslims in Britain is one of the most pressing issues facing British society today. A rise in the number of attacks on Muslims in Britain, increasing threats to civil liberties in the name of security measures, a resurgence in the activities of the far right in Britain as well as elsewhere in Europe, and a crackdown on refugees fleeing persecution place serious questions over Britain’s commitment to minority rights. The purpose of this report is to explore Muslim experience in Britain and to call for legislative and policy change.The author considers Muslims’ access to education, employment and housing, drawing upon new research and existing statistics as well as case studies and interviews. He discusses Muslims’ diverse and changing identities, their participation in politics at local and national level, their campaigns around education. He gives an outline of how Sharia law and English law conflict in some areas, but have been reconciled in others. Islamophobia and the media, and within the criminal justice system, particularly post-September 11th, are also examined. Finally, the author examines existing human rights legislation in relation to Muslims in Britain and finds that they are, for the most part, unprotected. A set of recommendations proposes some steps that could be taken to tackle religious discrimination, Islamophobia in the media, and other issues of concern.
