A autora aborda, inicialmente, aspectos históricos da circulação de catecismos no Brasil e, posteriormente, a trajetória do autor que nasceu em Pernambuco, mas atuou em Minas Gerais e no Rio de Janeiro, e da coleção produzida por ele, que circulou entre 1937 e 1965, tendo sido publicada, principalmente, pela José Olympio Editora, com ampla circulação nacional, adotada por escolas católicas e na formação do magistério, bem como as modificações editoriais e a aproximação dos fundamentos da pedagogia da Escola Nova católica. O livro também discute a atuação do Monsenhor Álvaro Negromonte em revistas católicas e educacionais, inserida no cenário de disputas pedagógicas e políticas da escola nova em relação aos defensores dos ideais católicos, nas décadas de 1930 e 1940.
