Excerpt from A Report to the Secretary of War on American Military Dead Overseas, 1920 Washington, D.C, May 12, 1920. The Honorable the Secretary of War. Sir: Pursuant to your instructions of February 13, 1920, to assist in effecting a Franco-American agreement on repatriating our military dead and to suggest those burial places most suitable for permanent retention, I sailed for Europe on February 19, returned to America on April 30, and present herewith an informal report. The recommendations in this report, numbered 1 to 7, are hereby approved, with the reservation that the permanence of the cemetery at Bony will be determined later, when we have accurate information as to the number of soldier dead associated with British military operations to be retained in Europe. I direct that this report be published immediately, in convenient form for distribution to the relatives and friends of our soldier dead abroad, in order that an accurate and detailed picture of all the conditions may be fully known to them. Memory In Transatlantic Relations written by Kryštof Kozák and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-13 with Social Science categories.

This volume focuses on the uses of collective memory in transatlantic relations between the United States, and Western and Central European nations in the period from the Cold War to the present day. Sitting at the intersection of international relations, history, memory studies and various "area" studies, Memory in Transatlantic Relations examines the role of memory in an international context, including the ways in which policy and decision makers utilize memory; the relationship between trauma, memory and international politics; the multiplicity of actors who shape memory; and the role of memory in the conflicts in post-Cold War Europe. Thematically organized and presenting studies centered on the U.S., Hungary, France, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the authors explore the built environment (memorials) and performances of memory (commemorations), shedding light on the ways in which memories are mobilized to frame relations between the U.S. and nations in Western and Central Europe. As such, it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences and historians with interests in memory studies, foreign policy and international relations.

Rest In Peace written by Gary Laderman and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-03-06 with Social Science categories.

Though it has often been passionately criticized--as fraudulent, exploitative, even pagan--the American funeral home has become nearly as inevitable as death itself, an institution firmly embedded in our culture. But how did the funeral home come to hold such a position? What is its history? And is it guilty of the charges sometimes leveled against it? In Rest in Peace, Gary Laderman traces the origins of American funeral rituals, from the evolution of embalming techniques during and after the Civil War and the shift from home funerals to funeral homes at the turn of the century, to the increasing subordination of priests, ministers, and other religious figures to the funeral director throughout the twentieth century. In doing so he shows that far from manipulating vulnerable mourners, as Jessica Mitford claimed in her best-selling The American Way of Death (1963), funeral directors are highly respected figures whose services reflect the community's deepest needs and wishes. Indeed, Laderman shows that funeral directors generally give the people what they want when it is time to bury our dead. He reveals, for example, that the open casket, often criticized as barbaric, provides a deeply meaningful moment for friends and family who must say goodbye to their loved one. But he also shows how the dead often come back to life in the popular imagination to disturb the peace of the living. Drawing upon interviews with funeral directors, major historical events like the funerals of John F. Kennedy and Rudolf Valentino, films, television, newspaper reports, proposals for funeral reform, and other primary sources, Rest in Peace cuts through the rhetoric to show us the reality--and the real cultural value--of the American funeral.
