Once Again written by Viera Masih Gossai and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-25 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

This memoir takes us on a journey of an Indian-American woman having endured an abusive marriage for decades. Viera Gossai narrates firsthand the effects of cultural norms, conventions, expectations after her divorce, and finally her restoration and awakening to a sense of herself. There are numerous predefined social norms created by our society that far too frequently accepts the distressed and depressed life of an abused married woman, but often rejects divorce, particularly in the Indian-American community. This memoir is a poignant reminder that one cannot and should not abandon hope in the face of the suffering and the unraveling of oneself and one’s identity. Once Again invites readers to believe in the hope that new beginnings are possible and the assurance that abuse will not be the last word.

Shaking Up The City written by Tom Slater and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-21 with Architecture categories.

"Shaking Up the City critically examines many of the concepts and categories within mainstream urban studies that serve dubious policy agendas. Through a combination of abstract theory and concrete empirical evidence, Tom Slater strives to 'shake up' mainstream urban studies in a concise and pointed fashion, turning on its head much of the prevailing wisdom in the field. In doing so, he explores the themes of 'data-driven innovation', urban 'resilience', gentrification, displacement and rent control, 'neighborhood effects', territorial stigmatization, and ethnoracial segregation. Slater analyzes how the mechanisms behind urban inequalities, material deprivation, marginality, and social suffering in cities across the world are perpetuated and made invisible. With important contributions to ongoing debates in sociology, geography, planning, and public policy, and engaging closely with struggles for land rights and housing justice, Shaking Up The City offers numerous insights for scholarship and political action to guard against the spread of vested interest urbanism"--

No Requiem For The Space Age written by Matthew D. Tribbe and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-06 with History categories.

During the summer of 1969-the summer Americans first walked on the moon-musician and poet Patti Smith recalled strolling down the Coney Island Boardwalk to a refreshment stand, where "pictures of Jesus, President Kennedy, and the astronauts were taped to the wall behind the register." Such was the zeitgeist in the year of the moon. Yet this holy trinity of 1960s America would quickly fall apart. Although Jesus and John F. Kennedy remained iconic, by the time the Apollo Program came to a premature end just three years later few Americans mourned its passing. Why did support for the space program decrease so sharply by the early 1970s? Rooted in profound scientific and technological leaps, rational technocratic management, and an ambitious view of the universe as a realm susceptible to human mastery, the Apollo moon landings were the grandest manifestation of postwar American progress and seemed to prove that the United States could accomplish anything to which it committed its energies and resources. To the great dismay of its many proponents, however, NASA found the ground shifting beneath its feet as a fierce wave of anti-rationalism arose throughout American society, fostering a cultural environment in which growing numbers of Americans began to contest rather than embrace the rationalist values and vision of progress that Apollo embodied. Shifting the conversation of Apollo from its Cold War origins to larger trends in American culture and society, and probing an eclectic mix of voices from the era, including intellectuals, religious leaders, rock musicians, politicians, and a variety of everyday Americans, Matthew Tribbe paints an electrifying portrait of a nation in the midst of questioning the very values that had guided it through the postwar years as it began to develop new conceptions of progress that had little to do with blasting ever more men to the moon. No Requiem for the Space Age offers a narrative of the 1960s and 1970s unlike any told before, with the story of Apollo as the story of America itself in a time of dramatic cultural change.
