Roused by the growing alarm, LeRoy Thadeusthe alligator judge of all the swamp and streamsand an unlikely band of compatriots leave the safety of their homes and dens to investigate. It is a perilous journey for Judge LeRoy, his raccoon bailiff Bullbore, Javier Ortiz the marsh rabbit, Bobby Lee the bobcat, and an osprey messenger called Screech, as they travel along forgotten paths through wildfires and strange countries to reach the fabled headwaters of the Pinelands. The echoes of an ancient war can be heard once more when the animals discover a threat that is determined to settle an old score. Danger lies around every turn, and the lives of free animals everywhere hang in the balance as Judge LeRoy and his companions unite to save their world from destruction. The nation's first and only "national reserve," the Pinelands of New Jersey is located in the middle of the densely populated urban corridor between New York City and Philadelphia. Possessing vast quantities of pure groundwater, distinct flora and fauna, and a fascinating history of human occupancy and resource exploitation, the Pine Barrens is managed by a 15-member commission appointed at the federal, state, and local level. In his discussion of the implementation of the Pinelands Commission's regional plan, Robert Mason explores the changing politics of place and the associated conflicts of interest that have emerged. The Pinelands program is widely viewed as a land-use and regional planning experiment of national significance. While the commission is sustained by legislative and gubernatorial support and an absence of well-organized public opposition, it still has had to accommodate community and rural entrepreneurial interests. In order to convey some sense of the social, political, and economic texture of the Pinelands, Mason examines three communities--Woodland Township, Hamilton Township, and Manchester Township. The Pinelands experience offers a unique model for the management of valued places across the nation and provides valuable lessons about the human problems that confront ecologically-driven planning schemes with human settlement patterns, political subdivisions, and economic systems. Author note: Robert J. Mason is Assistant Professor of Geography and Urban Studies at Temple University.

God S Children written by Archibald Rutledge and has been published by Arcadia Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-03-01 with Social Science categories.

This 1940s memoir provides a glimpse into the life and thoughts of a South Carolina plantation owner in the post-Civil War, pre-Civil Rights era. In 1937, after decades in the North, Archibald Rutledge returned to what he described as the “hyacinth days and camellia nights” of his native Carolina Lowcountry to restore his ancestral home, Hampton Plantation, which had been in his family since 1730. Originally published in 1947, these pages describe, in intimate and fascinating detail, the plantation life he found upon his return. In the simple, lyrical language of the first poet laureate of South Carolina, Rutledge portrays the black men and women, descendants of slaves, who labored alongside him in the marshes of the Santee, the stories they shared, and his interactions with them. God’s Children serves as a vivid snapshot of day-to-day activity on a plantation in the American South in the first half of the twentieth century, and of a lifestyle that was ever so slowly disappearing.
