Excerpt from A Roundabout Journey The ancient hotel received us in its ancient court yard, where the big sycamore tree grows and the galleries run round, and where there are benches for loiterers to sit in the sun. The next morning was cloudless, delicious. The soldiers and the children were sunning themselves in Place de la Ville, at the head of Rue de la République, where stands the statue of Crillon, friend of Henry Cf Navarre, and the pretty theater with the figures of Racine and Corneille seated in front. We were come to a land where statues can sit out-doors with comfort in win ter. I returned to the hotel with my hands full of the open-air roses of Provence, which are blooming everywhere. Excerpt from Roundabout to Moscow: An Epicurean Journey IF any reader of this book happens to be carrying about a heavy pack of fine old English prejudices, I beg that he or she will drop it before entering upon the eleven chap ters relating to Russia. The best preparative for crossing the Russian frontier is to throw out of the carriage-win dow every English volume with which the tourist has be guiled the way in the vain hope of forming correct impres sions of the country ahead. Englishmen can not be trusted to treat Russia fairly. John Bull hates Ivanovitch. With him the Russian is al ways a Tartar or a Cossack. Though these terms are not, in fact, opprobrious - since the Tartar of to-day is the model business man of Russia, industrious, faithful, highly respected, and the Cossack preserves none of his ancient traits but an excessive fondness for horses, a martial spirit, and fervent patriotism - they are slurring words in the En g lish sense. Americans have no cause of quarrel with Russians. There is no Turkey on this continent which we feel bound to save from the jaws of the Russian bear in order to de vour her ourselves. We have no distant province with zoo, ooo, ooo inhabitants of an alien race, retained by a tenure so precarious that the approach of a rival within 500 miles of the border throws us into a panic. We have no India. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Trip to Barbary by a Roundabout RouteIt is not, ordinarily, in the bowels of the earth that resolu tions are formed: although I once had the honour to be acquainted with a most atrocious scoundrel, who told me that he made up his mind to lead a good life while being whirled in a Parliamentary train through the Box Tunnel. On emerging into daylight, however, he repented the wrong way, and became a greater scoundrel than ever. It was in the sewer, neverthe less, that I said, I will start for Algiers on the 016th of April, and abide in Africa forty days, and I arrived at this determina tion in manner following.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Silver Butterfly Hayden was back in New York again after several years spent in the uttermost parts of the earth. He had been building railroads in South America, Africa, and China, and had maintained so many lodges in this or that wilderness that he really feared he might be curiously awkward in adapting himself to the conventional requirements of civilization. In his long roundabout journey home he had stopped for a few weeks in both London and Paris; but to his mental discomfort, they had but served to accentuate his loneliness and whet his longings for the dear, unforgotten life of his native city, that intimate, easy exist ence, wherein relatives, not too near, congenial friends and familiar haunts played so important a part.
