A Safe Place for Women tells a harrowing, but ultimately hopeful, story of one woman's ordeal with an abusive husband and how she gained the strength to leave him and thrive in a new life with her children. Noted women's advocate Kelly White unsparingly revisits the dark periods of her husband's irrational, violent moods. Her narrative makes clear why women often stay in such situations--and also how to end them. After each section of personal narrative, White discusses strategies, legal options, and supportive organizations to help abuse victims overcome the many problems that accompany abuse. White also includes compelling stories of other survivors of domestic violence and a comprehensive list of helping resources.

There is life, joy, and love after abuse As a young wife and mother, Kelly White experienced violence and terror at the hands of her husband. She knows firsthand the love–hate relationships women often have with their abusers and the devastating effects these feelings can have on independence and self-confidence. She has sought refuge in a women’s shelter, worked to obtain help from law enforcement and struggled financially and emotionally as a single mother and sole breadwinner. Twenty-five years later, as the leader of nationally recognized programs for battered women, she has helped thousands of women and children rebuild their lives. White’s own story, and those of other women who have survived and thrived, are related here. She also provides practical tools for abused women and the friends, family and professionals who seek to help them. You learn to: recognize dangerous red flags and break through denial use the legal, law-enforcement and organizational resources available in your community overcome fear and stress to build a new life discover the ways in which you are more powerful, competent and capable than you thought White includes important information on the impact of domestic violence on children, the role of drugs and alcohol in abuse, violence against people with disabilities and battering in the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgendered communities. While violence against women is not a thing of the past, using this resource can help battered women make it a part of their pasts — and create a safe and fulfilling future for themselves and their children.

Marginalized in the larger society and the mainstream women's movement, immigrant women are also outsiders in women's shelters, where racially sensitive and linguistically appropriate counselling is generally unavailable. In this book, Vijay Agnew documents the struggles of Canadian women's centres to provide better services to victims of wife abuse from Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. The study looks at every aspect of community-based women's organizations, including their funding, operation, and services. The result is a detailed picture of the problems and challenges they encounter on a daily basis. Agnew uses case studies, reports, and interviews to document the work of these groups and to show how race, class, and gender intersect in the everyday lives of the women who depend on them. Although the women's movement initiated public discussion of wife abuse, the fight against abuse is now conducted primarily by the state through its allocation of resources. Agnew underscores the tension that often arises between the patriarchal state and feminist-inspired organizations, and the resulting difficulties in bringing about social change.

An introduction to some of the best bothies in the UK. Featuring 26 selected bothies, the author shares her memories of using these free 'stone tents' in some of the country's wildest and most remote locations. Alongside notes on legends and landscape, wildlife and history, the book is full of expert guidance and tips on how to make use of bothies, from packing lists to bothy etiquette and the best walking routes in. Inspiring and fun, the book showcases bothies in Snowdonia, the Brecon Beacons, Lake District, Pennines, the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, and Northumberland, and is a personal celebration of the world of bothying. Hidden away in the hills and mountains of England, Scotland and Wales - for years known only to a lucky few - is a network of huts, cottages and shelters. Completely free to use, these secretive refuges can be life-savers, quick stops and destinations in themselves. The network of British bothies is cared for by the Mountain Bothies Association, and day-to-day by the walkers, climbers and mountain lovers who rest there.

From the Publisher: Christina Crawford's devastating memoir Mommie Dearest (over 5,000,000 sold), first as book and later as Hollywood film, made the American public aware of violence in the family. In No Safe Place, drawing further on her personal story, but adding sociological research and case histories, the author shows how family violence is responsible for addictive behavior, depression, sleep disorders, chronic illness, suicide, delinquency, homelessness, and apparently "mindless" violent crime. A call to action, this impassioned book offers the hope that in facing the truth about our families we can save our society and ourselves.

A unique, two-volume study that examines female crime and the women who commit it. The two-volume Women Criminals: An Encyclopedia of People and Issues addresses both key topics and key figures in women's crime. The first volume provides topical essays about areas critical to the understanding of female criminals, such as the definition of women's crime, explanations of women's criminality, ethnic and age diversity in female criminals, and responses of the criminal justice system. The second volume comprises biographical entries profiling women who are obviously criminals, such as Aileen Wuornos and Myra Hindley, and also women who were victims of circumstance, unjust laws, or narrowly applied definitions of crime, such as Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, and Sophie Scholl. In addition to highlighting the breadth of women's criminality, these portraits provide a holistic, multifaceted understanding of the dynamics of women's crime and why it occurs, connecting the individual stories to the larger social-scientific perspectives. Care has been taken to include the women's own voices and perspectives where possible and to address the intentions and reasoning of the system that responded to their criminality.

Women S Rights To Social Security And Social Protection written by Beth Goldblatt and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10-23 with Law categories.

This collection examines the human rights to social security and social protection from a women's rights perspective. The contributors stress the need to address women's poverty and exclusion within a human rights framework that takes account of gender. The chapters unpack the rights to social security and protection and their relationship to human rights principles such as gender equality, participation and dignity. Alongside conceptual insights across the field of women's social security rights, the collection analyses recent developments in international law and in a range of national settings. It considers the ILO's Social Protection Floors Recommendation and the work of UN treaty bodies. It explores the different approaches to expansion of social protection in developing countries (China, Chile and Bolivia). It also discusses conditionality in cash transfer programmes, a central debate in social policy and development, through a gender lens. Contributors consider the position of poor women, particularly single mothers, in developed countries (Australia, Canada, the United States, Ireland and Spain) facing the damaging consequences of welfare cuts. The collection engages with shifts in global discourse on the role of social policy and the way in which ideas of crisis and austerity have been used to undermine rights with harsh impacts on women.
