In 1054 CE, the Great Schism between Eastern and Western Christianity occurred, and the official break of communion between the two ancient branches of the church continues to this day. There have been numerous church commissions and academic groups created to try and bridge the ecumenical divides between East and West, yet official communion is still just out of reach. The thought of St. Maximus the Confessor, a saint of both churches, provides a unique theological lens through which to map out a path of ecumenical understanding and, hopefully, reconciliation and union. Through an exposition of the intellectual history of Maximus' theological influence, his moral and spiritual theology, and his metaphysical vision of creation, a common Christianity emerges. This book brings together leading scholars and thinkers from both traditions around the theology of St. Maximus to cultivate greater union between Eastern and Western Christianity.

Beyond East And West written by John C.H. Wu and has been published by University of Notre Dame Pess this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-02-28 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

When John C. H. Wu’s spiritual autobiography Beyond East and West was published in 1951, it became an instant Catholic best seller and was compared to Thomas Merton’s The Seven Storey Mountain, which had appeared four years earlier. It was also hailed as the new Confession of St. Augustine for its moving description of Wu’s conversion in 1937 and early years as a Catholic. This new edition, including a foreward written by Wu’s son John Wu, Jr., makes this profoundly beautiful book by one of the most influential Chinese lay Catholic intellectuals of the twentieth century available for a new generation of readers hungry for spiritual sustenance. Beyond East and West recounts the story of Wu’s early life in Ningpo, China, his family and friendships, education and law career, drafting of the constitution of the Republic of China, translation of the Bible into classical Chinese in collaboration with Chinese president Chiang Kai-Shek, and his role as China’s delegate to the Holy See. In passages of arresting beauty, the book reveals the development of his thought and the progress of his growth toward love of God, arriving through experience at the conclusion that the wisdom in all of China’s traditions, especially Confucian thought, Taoism, and Buddhism, point to universal truths that come from, and are fulfilled in, Christ. In Beyond East and West, Wu develops a synthesis between Catholicism and the ancient culture of the Orient. A sublime expression of faith, here is a book for anyone who seeks the peace of the spirit, a memorable book whose ideas will linger long after its pages are closed.

Making Martyrs East And West written by Cathy Caridi and has been published by Northern Illinois University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-14 with Religion categories.

In Making Martyrs East and West, Cathy Caridi examines how the practice of canonization developed in the West and in Russia, focusing on procedural elements that became established requirements for someone to be recognized as a saint and a martyr. Caridi investigates whether the components of the canonization process now regarded as necessary by the Catholic Church are fundamentally equivalent to those of the Russian Orthodox Church and vice versa, while exploring the possibility that the churches use the same terminology and processes but in fundamentally different ways that preclude the acceptance of one church's saints by the other. Making Martyrs East and West will appeal to scholars of religion and church history, as well as ecumenicists, liturgists, canonists, and those interested in East-West ecumenical efforts.

Thecla written by Jeremy W. Barrier and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with Acts of Paul and Thecla categories.

This book is the first modern collection of studies about the fascinating figure of Thecla and the development of her cult in East and West. While her role in the Acts of Paul and Thecla has often been analysed, and was the subject of an earlier volume in this series, the historical development of her cult from early Christian to modern times has received much less attention and is therefore the subject of this book. The volume starts with a series of four studies that trace her cult and its literary manifestations from late Antiquity to Byzantine times. We hear about visions of Thecla and additional miracles beyond those already known, and we can follow her cult from Asia Minor, through Syria, to Turfan in modern Western China, although the autonomy and uniqueness of Thecla was often suppressed in these new localities. From the East we move to the West where her figure appears in Latin texts and a previously unpublished Arabic version of the Acts of Paul and Thecla. Subsequently, three chapters analyse representations of Thecla in Turkish Ayatekla (ancient Seleucia), in the grotto of St Paul in Ephesus and in Coptic iconography. From the East we then move back to the West, particularly to Spain. Thecla's cult was brought from Asia Minor via Armenia to Tarragona, where it remains alive today. The last two chapters look at the historiographical trajectories of the Acts of Paul and Thecla and the testimonies of the Christian martyrs, respectively. As has become customary, the volume concludes with an extensive bibliography and detailed index.

Saint Joan Of Arc written by Victoria Sackville-West and has been published by Grove Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Vita Sackville-West wrote Saint Joan of Arc in 1936 at the age of forty-four, and had, at that point, already been writing for thirty years. At fourteen, Sackville-West published her first book, and at fourteen Joan of Arc first heard the voices. Joan was seventeen when she took command of the armies of France--a peasant girl in the early fifteenth century in charge of a nation's forces. At nineteen she was captured by the British and tried as a witch by a church court. Before her twentieth birthday she was burned at the stake. In 1920 she was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church as a saint. In a clever, brisk voice, Vita Sackville-West tells the triumphant story of a French peasant girl raised in a country torn apart by the Hundred Years' War who rose from poverty to military greatness. With dazzling insight and clarity, Sackville-West breathes new life into Joan of Arc's beautiful and tragic story.
