Excerpt from A Sea Trip in Clipper Ship Days On a chill gray afternoon in December, the good Ship, National Eagle, left the wharf in East Boston, bound for New Orleans. A group of relatives and friends, a few minutes before had filed down the gangway, and were still standing on the wharf, waving hats and handkerchiefs, as the ship, her moorings loosened and cast off, began to move slowly and majestically away from the pier. On board of her, as she glided away, in the waning light of the short winter afternoon, were the Captain; three officers or mates, designated as first, second and third; a carpenter; a steward; a cook; a crew of twenty or more men, known as "sailors before the mast"; and four younger men, called boys to distinguish them from the men of the crew. There were also two passengers, my sister and myself - daughters of the Captain. The Era of the Clipper Ship was the most picturesque, and perhaps the most profitable period, in the maritime life of the United States. It began about 1843 because of the growing demand for a quicker delivery of tea from China. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Ocean Life in the Old Sailing Ship Days: From Forecastle to Quarter-Deck; With 29 Illustrations From Photographs "Captain, why don't you write a book?" This question has been often asked me when relating some tale of adventure or humorous anecdote of my sea life. "For the reason that I know nothing of book writing," I have replied. "A school experience of seventy years ago, cut short at the age of twelve years, was not likely to leave a boy, however bright, with a high order of literary attainment." But, as years rolled on, after giving up the sea as a profession, I concluded to jot down from memory my quarter-century's sea experience. The characters are from life, the scenes and incidents as they appeared to me at the time, in a story of a New England boy's career from the age of twelve to thirty-seven. Excerpt from Sailing Ships: The Story of Their Development From the Earliest Times to the Present Day I trust that both the yachtsman and sailorman will find in these pages something of the same exciting pleasure which has been mine in tracing the course of the evolutions through which their ships have passed. Those whose work or amusement it is to acquaint themselves with the sailing ship and her ways, and for lack of time and Opportunity are unable to seek out the noble pedigree of what Ruskin truly described as one of the loveliest things man ever made, and one of the noblest, may care to learn what were the changing conditions which combined to bring about such a highly complex creature as the modern sailing ship. Perhaps at some time when handling a rope, a spar, a tiller or a sail, they may have won dered how it all began; what were the origins of all those various parts of a ships furniture why some essential portions have scarcely changed; and how other portions are the outcome of time. Experiment, and science. I hope that to neither the amateur nor the professional sailor I shall seem impertinent if I have attempted to tell them something about their ship which they did not know before. But if, on the other hand, I shall have succeeded in increasing their love for the sailing-ship by outlining her career, I trust that this may be allowed to counterbalance the defects which, in a subject of so vast a scope, are hardly to be avoided in spite of considerable care and the generous assistance of many kind friends. Finally, I make my appeal to the younger generation, to whom ships and the sea have in all times suggested so much that is bound up with adventure and brave deeds. The present moment sees us at a stage in the history of ships when the Royal Navy as a whole, and the Merchant Service almost entirely, have no longer any convenience for sail. There is a dire need in the latter for both officers and men, whilst on shore the conditions of employment are exactly the reverse. Excerpt from Single-Handed Cruising Let us pause for a moment to consider an average day's work in the course of a single-handed cruise round the coast. The yachtsman, awakened probably by the strong sunlight streaming through the cabin doors, turns out at, say, seven o'clock. He climbs on deck and takes down the riding light before going over board for a swim. After a brisk towelling he puts on the kettle to boil whilst he dresses. Then he makes himself a cup of tea and fills a pipe, and it may be remarked incidentally that no pipe tastes so sweet as that after a bathe in the early morning. The real business of the day commences with deck-scrubbing, to be followed by a little brass-cleaning. If he happento be jealous of the appearance of his craft he will also wipe over all bright teak fittings and the topsides with a chamois leather damped with fresh water. Before preparing breakfast the bedding and blankets will be put outside to air, the bedding on the cabin-top and the blankets hung over the boom. Then breakfast has to be prepared and eaten, and after the meal the things must be washed up and put away and the cabin swept out and tidied. Even then the preliminary work of the day is not quite completed, as there still remain the cabin lamp and riding light to clean and fill in readiness for the following night, for no methodical owner would leave them dirty. By the time he is ready to get under way the hands of the clock will probably point to half-past nine, or even ten, but if the weather be fine he may be able to take it easy for a few hours when clear of the anchorage. Should the wind be ahead he will have to stick at the helm, but when the yacht is reaching the tiller can often be lashed. It depends a good deal on the type of boat, however, whether she can be trusted to sail herself. If she has a fairly long straight keel a yacht will sail steadily on a reach for quite long periods. My old 7 -tonner Seabird was a craft of that type, and under such conditions she would sail herself for hours on end with scarcely any supervision. Given a boat of this type, fine summer weather, and a nice reaching breeze, and you have single-handed sailing in excelsz's. You may even lounge in a deck-chair with pipe and book, just casting a glance around every now and then to see that your course is clear. Excerpt from Fair Winds and Foul: A Narrative of Daily Life Aboard an American Clipper Ship A period in the commerce of the United States remains unrecorded except in the official annals. It is a most important period because it records the pioneer develop ment of the deep sea trading that today places this country so high in active competition with the open markets of the world. Prior to 1866 the Packet Ships carried passengers and merchandise from port to port on the Atlantic Ocean. A few years later the Clipper Ship Service was started; these sailing ships were specially built and rigged for speed and they followed the deep sea routes between the Atlantic ports, the East Indies, China and California and the seaboard cities of South America. They operated until about the year 1884, when the lower wages of Great Britain and Germany made competition too keen for them to survive. Just following this period the trans continental railroads were developed to transport freight to the west coast, and a little later the steam vessel became a factor in the oceanic trade. Excerpt from The Colonial Clippers IN this book I have attempted to give some account of the beautiful sailing ships which played so great a part in the development of the great British Dominions under the Southern Cross. It is written specially for the officers and seamen of our Mercantile Marine, and I have endeavoured to avoid such a criticism as the following Heaps about other ships, but my old barkey was one of the fastest and best known of them all and he dismisses her with a line or two. I have made rather a point of giving passage records, as they are an everlasting theme of interest when sea men get together and yarn about old ships. The memory is notoriously unreliable where sailing records are concerned, so I have been most careful to check these from logbooks and Captains' reports. Even Lloyd's I have found to be out by a day or two on occasions. A great deal of my material has. Been gathered bit by bit through the past 25 or 30 years. Alas! Many of the old timers, who so kindly lent me abstract logs and wrote me interesting letters, have now passed away. Excerpt from A Second Visit to North America, Vol. 1 of 2 After sailing at the rate of more than 200 miles a day for four days, our progress was retarded, Sept. By an equinoctial gale, which came in from the south west, and, blowing for twelve hours, raised such a sea, that we only made four miles an hour.
