Contains The Discourses/Fragments/Enchiridion 'I must die. But must I die bawling?' Epictetus, a Greek Stoic and freed slave, ran a thriving philosophy school in Nicopolis in the early second century AD. His animated discussions were celebrated for their rhetorical wizardry and were written down by Arrian, his most famous pupil. The Discourses argue that happiness lies in learning to perceive exactly what is in our power to change and what is not, and in embracing our fate to live in harmony with god and nature. In this personal, practical guide to the ethics of Stoicism and moral self-improvement, Epictetus tackles questions of freedom and imprisonment, illness and fear, family, friendship and love. Translated and Edited with an Introduction by Robert Dobbin

DESPITE BEING BORN into slavery, Greco-Roman philosopher Epictetus became one of the most influential thinkers of his time. Discourses and Selected Writings is a transcribed collection of informal lectures given by the philosopher around AD 108. A gateway into the life and mind of a great intellectual, it is also an important example of the usage of Koine or ?common? Greek, an ancestor to Standard Modern Greek. HOW A MAN ON EVERY OCCASION CAN MAINTAIN HIS PROPER CHARACTER.-To the rational animal only is the irrational intolerable; but that which is rational is tolerable. Blows are not naturally intolerable. How is that? See how the Lacedaemonians endure whipping when they have learned that whipping is consistent with reason. To hang yourself is not intolerable. When then you have the opinion that it is rational, you go and hang yourself. In short, if we observe, we shall find that the animal man is pained by nothing so much as by that which is irrational; and, on the contrary, attracted to nothing so much as to that which is rational. Though Epictetus contends that man has power over his will, he well knew how weak this power sometimes is. An appearance, he says, is presented, and straightway I act according to it; and, what is the name of those who follow every appearance? They are called madmen. - Such are a large part of mankind; and it is true, that many persons have no Will at all. They are deceived by appearances, perplexed, tossed about like a ship which has lost the helm: they have no steady, fixed, and rational purpose. Their perseverance or obstinacy is often nothing more than a perseverance in an irrational purpose. It is often so strong and so steady that the man himself and others too may view it as a strong will; and it is a strong will, if you choose, but it is a will in a wrong direction. "The nature of the Good is a certain Will: the nature of the Bad is a certain kind of Will." This edition of A SELECTION FROM THE DISCOURSES WITH THE ENCHEIRIDION includes: - TRANSLATION by George Long - PREFACE and THE PHILOSOPHY OF EPICTETUS BY EDWIN GINN - QUOTES BY EPICTETUS

The Enchiridion, or Handbook was written by a student of Epictetus in the 2nd century. It is a short guide to ethical living, and its focus is more practical than the metaphysical treatises of earlier Greek philosophers. It assumes that "some things are up to us and some are not up to us," and instructs the reader how to deal well with what life brings. It remained an important handbook for Christians and pagans alike for many centuries.

Epictetus was a Greek stoic philosopher who was probably born a slave in Turkey. He lived most of his life in Rome until he was exiled to Greece. His pupil Arrian wrote down his discourses originally in 8 volumes of which 4 survived. The lectures were not written down verbatim but were probably paraphrased by Arian. The earliest known manuscript is a 12-century manuscript located in the library at Oxford, England.
