Shared Heritage written by Angela M. Labrador and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013 with Cultural property categories.

A common narrative in the late twentieth-early twenty-first centuries is that historic rural landscapes and cultural practices are in danger of disappearing in the face of modern development pressures. However, efforts to preserve rural landscapes have dichotomized natural and cultural resources and tended to "freeze" these resources in time. They have essentialized the character of both "rural" and "developed" and ignored the dynamic natural and cultural processes that produce them. In this dissertation I outline an agenda for critical and applied heritage research that reframes heritage as a transformative social practice in order to move beyond the hegemonic treatment of heritage as the objects of cultural property. I propose an anthropological theory of shared heritage : a culturally mediated ethical practice that references the past in order to intervene in alienating processes of the present to secure a recognizable future for practitioners and prospective beneficiaries. More specifically, I develop (1) an ethical framework for shared heritage practice that values social tolerance and future security, (2) a model for the critical assessment of a heritage protection strategy's potential for supporting a shared heritage ethic, and (3) a methodology for scholars, heritage advocates, and community leaders to realistically enact shared heritage. I document two case studies of rural residents implementing heritage protection strategies in the face of suburban and tourism development in Hadley, Massachusetts, and Eleuthera, Bahamas, respectively. I engage with these case studies at three distinct levels: (1) locating and critiquing the potential for a shared heritage ethics in the attempts to preserve private agricultural land in Hadley; (2) developing and applying a community-based heritage inventory assessment in Hadley; and (3) modeling an internet-based communications system for supporting shared heritage development in Eleuthera. Taken together, this dissertation offers an anthropological model for documenting and analyzing the discursive and material productions of cultural identities and landscapes inherent in heritage resource protection and a set of methods that heritage professionals and practitioners can apply to cultivate shared heritage ethics.

Our Shared Heritage written by Myrna Plousha Heath and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-12-15 with African Americans categories.

In Our Shared Heritage Myrna Plousha Heath provides a glimpse into the lives and times of the allied Wells, Plauche Clark and Dewson families during their three centuries in America. The history spans the time period between 1760 and 2008. The two books, a journal and a narrative in one volume, describe two unique heritages and their merger in San Francisco, California in the 1930s. The first book, Wellswood and Beyond, a journal, begins with the depiction of Native American pre-colonial life in the wilderness of what is now the state of Louisiana. It contrasts the exisitence of elitist Wells, Plauche and Clark planters with the enslaved on ante bellum Louisiana plantations of the 1800s. It reveals the intimacies of the slaveholders and the enslaved who created a mixed race Wells, Plauche and Clark family. The history focuses on the nine children of Elizabeth Evans and the progeny of her sister Margaret Clark. The chronicle documents the families' challenging multi state migration out of Louisiana from the early 1900s to the mid twentieth century. The final chapters present the personal accomplishments and memorable events in the lives of the nine siblings and their descendants The second book, Corporal Dewson's Family Circle, is an intriguing narative of diversity, abolitionism and the American Civil War. The history begins in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1805 and continues in Boston at the height of the abolitionist movement. It includes the best documented profile of black abolitionist, David Walker and his son Edwin G. Walker, Esq. The saga describes Corporal Dewson's life as a Union soldier in occupied New Orleans, Louisiana. It archives the fight to free the enslaved and the continuing struggle for equal justice for all Americans. The Narrative ends in Oakland, California in 1904. The Qur An And Late Antiquity written by Angelika Neuwirth and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-19 with Religion categories.

In this book, Angelika Neuwirth provides a new approach to understanding the founding text of Islam. Typical exegesis of the Qur'an treats the text teleologically, as a fait accompli finished text, or as a replica or summary of the Bible in Arabic. Instead Neuwirth approaches the Qur'an as the product of a specific community in the Late Antique Arabian peninsula, one which was exposed to the wider worlds of the Byzantine and Sasanian empires, and to the rich intellectual traditions of rabbinic Judaism, early Christianity, and Gnosticism. A central goal of the book is to eliminate the notion of the Qur'an as being a-historical. She argues that it is, in fact, highly aware of its place in late antiquity and is capable of yielding valuable historical information. By emphasizing the liturgical function of the Qur'an, Neuwirth allows readers to see the text as an evolving oral tradition within the community before it became collected and codified as a book. This analysis sheds much needed light on the development of the Qur'an's historical, theological, and political outlook. The book's final chapters analyze the relationship of the Qur'an to the Bible, to Arabic poetic traditions, and, more generally, to late antique culture and rhetorical forms. By providing a new introduction to the Qur'an, one that uniquely challenges current ideas about its emergence and development, The Qur'an and Late Antiquity bridges the gap between Eastern and Western approaches to this sacred text.
