Excerpt from A Short History of Australia The aim of the author has been to make the book answer such questions as might reasonably be put to it by an intelligent reader, who will of course have regard to the limitations imposed by its size; and also to present a picture of the phases through which the country has passed. At the same time it is hoped that due importance has been given to personality. History is a record of the doings of men living in communities, not of blind, nerve less forces. Excerpt from Short History of Australia Should that occur, the British race will, through them and through the North Americans, still be at the heart of events. Ten years have now elapsed since the establish ment of the Commonwealth of Australia. It sealed the union of the colonies, and legally recognized the national existence. That is the point to which we have attempted to carry the story. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from What We Saw in Australia The title of our book indicates that an exhaustive account of the Colonies we visited does not come within its scope. Time fell very far short of permitting us to see everything of interest contained in each; what, however, is missing from our description of one Province will probably be found in our account of another, and thus, we believe, we. Excerpt from The Making of Australasia: A Brief History of the Origin and Development of the British Dominions in the South Pacific This book is an effort to give a brief but accurate account of the winning and making of Australasia. It may seem that a disproportionate amount of space has been given to the earlier history of Australia. For this there are several reasons. A good deal of new material bearing on the early periods of settlement and of the events that preceded settlement has only recently been made available. The fact that the French took formal possession of part of Australia, for instance, has appeared in no previous history. Then, apart from the special interest that attaches to the beginnings of development, the early days present very much of historical interest. What may be called the middle period of Australian history is comparatively featureless except to the specialist. It was a time of peaceful progress and development. Except for the story of e ploration and for one or two outstanding events there is not much of it to be said in a general history. In some of the colonies important constitutional questions were raised and dealt with, but in a work of this kind it is impossible to treat of these in detail. With the years 1914 - 1918 the case is different. Australia was then drawn into the main stream of world events, and the years of war were crowded with happenings of great magnitude. An attempt has been made to sketch the main outlines of this period, and to indicate the changes in outlook which they caused. But to attempt to deal in detail with the war efforts of Australia would be outside the scope of this book. To treat the matter fully and in its proper perspective it would be necessary to give some thing like a new history of the war. Excerpt from The History of Australian Discovery and Colonisation The intention of the writer of these outlines of the history of Australian discovery, settlement, and progress, is not to. Give a history of every voyage for Australian discovery, or a detail of every thing which has taken place in the progress of Australian colonisation, but to convey in a popular form such a general knowledge of the discovery and settlement of his, country as every Australian youth ought to possess; and to enable teachers to place before their pupils interesting and instructive lessons in a branch of education which has been hitherto almost, if not entirely, neglected. In order to sim plify and condense as much as possible the matter contained in the following chapters, the writer has thought it best not to encumber the text with authorities, references, and notes. Personal anecdotes, and matters of merely individual or private interest, have been introduced or alluded to very sparingly, and only in cases where they were considered necessary to illustrate or explain the condition of society, or to afford an insight into the characters of public men, public movements, or political changes. Excerpt from Five Years Experience in Australia Felix: Comprising a Short Account MY object in writing the following pages, is to give the most recent and authentic information concerning the Province of australia felix. Having been a resident for some years in this fine portion of the British dominions, I have had Opportunities of witnessing the great changes which have taken place in its affairs 5 during that period I have seen it sink for a season into a state of nearly universal bankruptcy - not from any dearth of natural resources-not from its inaptitude 'for colonization - but rather from that headstrong spirit of speculation, which in all newly-formed communities is generally found to prevail. This was doubtless the main cause of the late unfortunate crisis 5 that it was not the only source of its depression the reader will perceive by perusing the following pages.
