Excerpt from A Short History of the Greeks: From the Earliest Times, to B. C. 146 Histories of Greece is the hope that the writer has been able so to state the old story - modified by recent studies and discoveries - as to suit the needs or tastes of certain classes of readers and students. In a book of this size it is impossible not to curtail or omit much that is interesting and even important. The aim of the writer, in selecting the topics to be dwelt upon, has been to choose those which best illus trate the political life and intellectual activities of the Greeks wherever they lived, not only in Greece proper, but in the larger Greece of Italy, Sicily, and Asia. To do this at all adequately in so short a space it was often necessary to reduce details as to particular cities and districts to a very low standard. The writer has wished to treat Greek History in a wide Hellenic spirit, but in spite of good resolutions he has found it as impossible, as others seem to have done, to avoid giving Athens the lion's share in the story. Greek History Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Swoboda and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-13 with History categories.

Excerpt from Greek History Professor swoboda has won so high a rank among students of classical antiquity that it would be superfluous, and indeed presumptuous, for his translator to recall that distinguished scholar's excellent works to the memory of the learned reader; and the little History now presented in English dress, though addressed to a less academic audience, is fully equal to the author's reputation. It has the rare merits of succinctness and lucidity, however imperfectly these ex cellences may be conveyed in translation and in addition it brings the history of Greece down to the present day. To most readers the story of ancient Greece is a fairy tale from olden times, at best half romance, and severed by an im passable chasm from the reality of the modern age. This conception is thoroughly false; the history of the Greeks, like that of the Jews, to which it has manifold points of likeness, has passed without a break from the classical into the imperial, the medieval, and the modern eras, and bids fair to become no mean chapter in the story of the nations that has yet to be unfolded. Excerpt from The Story of the Greek People, an Elementary History of Greece The plan of this book is not only to present a simple outline of the chief events in the history of ancient Greece, but also to picture the customs of the people, their manner of living and thinking and feeling. So far as the size and scope of the little volume will permit, the names of those who were masters in art and literature are introduced, not in separate chapters as mere adjuncts to political history, but in their natural connection with the annals of their times, and ever in accordance with Plutarch's dictum, Often an action of small note, a short saying or a jest, shall distinguish a person's real character more than the greatest sieges or the most important battles. A Smaller History of Greece: From the Earliest Times to the Roman Conquest is intended to be an introduction to Greek history appropriate for students on the high school level. The book is divided into twenty-two chapters and provides a fairly broad and all-encompassing dissection of Greek history. The first chapter details the geography of Greece and includes a number of maps to serve as a visual aide to students. From there, the book takes a chronological approach to telling the history of Greece. The book begins its history in 776 BCE, telling the story of the development of language and writing in Greece. The book proceeds through Greece's history, offering short chapters on many of the most significant events in the history of the Mediterranean nation, from The Persian Wars to the supremacy of Sparta to the death of Alexander the Great and Rome's conquest of Greece. Those unfamiliar with Greek history will surely appreciate the survey approach adopted by Smith in the writing of this textbook. Excerpt from History of Greece, Vol. 1 Though we can add nothing to the existing records of Greek History, the estimate placed upon their value, and the conclusions drawn from them are constantly changing, and for this reason the story which has been told so often will be told anew from time to time, so long as it continues to have an interest for mankind - that is, let us hope, so long as mankind continue to exist. The present work is intended for readers who are acquainted with the outlines of the subject, and have some knowledge of the Greek language. It has been written in the belief that an intelligible sketch of Greek civilisation may be given within' a brief compass - not with the h0pe of throwing new light on 01d obscurities, or quoting fresh evidence where all the evidence has been long ago collected. Excerpt from A History of Greece, Vol. 1 of 2 Tas plan of the little work begun in this volume has been considerably enlarged since it was first undertaken, and the author fears that a critical eye may be able to detect some traces of this variation from the original de siguin the manner of treating one or two subjects. He would be glad if he might believe that this was its chief defect. But he is most desirous that the object which he has had in view should be understood. Excerpt from A History of Greece: From the Earliest Times to the Macedonian Conquest IN writing this short history of Greece, the author has kept in view the requirements of the upper forms in schools, and of the final pass examination at the univer sities. He trusts that the work may not be without its use, as for a considerable time there has appeared no new school history of Greece, brought up to the level of recent discoveries. He has endeavoured to add as much fresh matter to the book as was possible, without plunging into the mazes of the controversies which have grown up around certain questions.
