This book introduces the history of the Taino Indians. Columbus came to Puerto Rico on his second voyage to the New World in 1493. There he found the Taino Indians, who mistakenly showed him the local abundance and wealth. Their fate was doomed ever since. The Taino Indians were not a laborious race to begin with. But after Puerto Rico was established as a colonial stronghold, they survived poverty, plagues and hurricanes on their own.

Religion is fundamental to contemporary Puerto Rican society. From the cosmology of the Indigenous Taíno, to the wide range of Judeo-Christian churches and sects, to the practitioners of spiritism, Afro-Caribbean religions, and witchcraft, religious practice in its many forms permeates the lives of most Puerto Ricans. Communities of the Soul illuminates the landscape and history of religion in Puerto Rico from the beliefs and practices of the Taíno to the religious diversity of the present day. Throughout its history, religion in Puerto Rico has braided institutional forms and popular practices, yet has always been a community-based process – made by the people. When the island was under Spanish colonial rule, the formal but weak presence of Catholicism meant that Puerto Ricans cultivated their religious experiences within families and local communities as much as within the structures of the church. These communal practices continued as Puerto Ricans joined Protestant denominations – particularly evangelical Pentecostalism – after the American conquest of the island in 1898. In the second half of the twentieth century, religious diversity increased with the formation of Jewish and Muslim communities, as well as numerous local evangelical congregations. Even as Puerto Rican society becomes more cosmopolitan and diverse, popular devotions and ritualistic practices remain an important part of everyday life. The first synthesis of the religious history of the island, Communities of the Soul is an innovative exploration of religion in Puerto Rico and the beliefs, practices, and diversity of its past and present.

Puerto Rico is the oldest colony in the world and it is under the control of the United States of America, a nation that prides itself on its respect for human rights. Bills have already been presented in the United States Congress to resolve Puerto Rico's colonial status. Three options are possible under international law: Independence, Free Association, or Statehood. Soon, the citizens of Puerto Rico and the United States will have to make a decision and will need to be well informed. That is the purpose of this book. I think the important factors in history are the events, not the leaders or the people. It is the events that form the character of a nation. In Puerto Rico: Spanish absolutism; the Lares Revolution; the Spanish-American War; the failed attempts of Americanization; the blatant exploitation of sugar cane plantations; the nationalist guerrilla; the accelerated industrialization; the demoralizing welfare; the rampant corruption of the pro-statehood administrations. All of these, and other similar experiences, have molded the Puerto Rican character. Some countries are laborious; other are inventive; other are greedy; other are perseverant; other are aggressive and other are docile. What is Puerto Rico? Read its history and find out. Are countries a reflection of its leaders; are leaders a reflection of their countries; or are we all the product of the events?

Van Middledyk's work was the first major historical study of Puerto Rico in English. Van Middledyk advanced Puerto Rican historiography by building on the works of Brau, Coll y Toste, and Acosta, and by consulting early Spanish chronicles. A librarian at the Free Public Library of San Juan, Van Middledyk possessed knowledge of and access to considerable primary source material. His history is sympathetic to the Indians and highly critical of Spanish colonial administration. Coming in the wake of American military occupation, the book sought to explain and justify control of the island by the United States.

Offering a comprehensive overview of Puerto Rico's history and evolution since the installation of U.S. rule, Cesar Ayala and Rafael Bernabe connect the island's economic, political, cultural, and social past. Puerto Rico in the American Century explores Puerto Ricans in the diaspora as well as the island residents, who experience an unusual and daily conundrum: they consider themselves a distinct people but are part of the American political system; they have U.S. citizenship but are not represented in the U.S. Congress; and they live on land that is neither independent nor part of the United States. Highlighting both well-known and forgotten figures from Puerto Rican history, Ayala and Bernabe discuss a wide range of topics, including literary and cultural debates and social and labor struggles that previous histories have neglected. Although the island's political economy remains dependent on the United States, the authors also discuss Puerto Rico's situation in light of world economies. Ayala and Bernabe argue that the inability of Puerto Rico to shake its colonial legacy reveals the limits of free-market capitalism, a break from which would require a renewal of the long tradition of labor and social activism in Puerto Rico in connection with similar currents in the United States.

This ready reference guide to more than 500 years of political, social, economic, and cultural development in Puerto Rico fills a conspicuous information gap. It rectifies what has been to date a lack of easily accessible, accurate, and relevant information in English about Puerto Rico and its 3.6 million inhabitants. From African roots to El Yunque (Puerto Rico's tropical rain forest), this encyclopedia offers nearly 300 substantive entries on important people, places, events, social and political issues, legislation, movements and organizations, and terms and concepts. Entries underscore the history, achievements, and creations of the Puerto Rican people. Each entry concludes with a short list of suggested reading for further information. A selection of photos enhances the text. Included are biographical entries on historical figures and political leaders, as well as poets, novelists, painters, musicians, and artists who have contributed to Puerto Rican culture. Entries on events crucial to the development of Puerto Rico and its relationship to the United States over the last one hundred years, including its political status, will help the reader to understand the complex nature of the ties that bind the United States and Puerto Rico. Also included are entries devoted to individuals or events that have heretofore received little attention in Puerto Rican history, such as the feminism movement. The authors, faculty members at the Center for Caribbean Studies at Central Connecticut State University, are specialists in the history and culture of Puerto Rico. The encyclopedia belongs on the shelves of every school and public library that has ever fielded a question on Puerto Rico.
