Excerpt from A Short History of the English Drama This book makes no special effort to be either original or profound. It aims simply to set forth in brief compass the main facts that one might wish to have at hand in his first course in the English Drama. The great revival of interest in this subject within recent years has produced many noteworthy studies, especially in the literature of the age of Elizabeth; but, singularly enough, most of the books that have been written have been for those who already knew most about the subject. The present work pre supposes only that the student has had an elementary col lege course in the history of English Literature, and with just so much as a basis it endeavors to assist him as he passes on to the study of the greatest of the forms that this literature has so far assumed. Excerpt from A Brief History of the English Drama From the Earliest to the Latest Times The powers of abstract thought necessary for the conception, even more than the com prehension of the dramatic form, denotes a certain stage of civilization that need not be demanded by either the lyric or-epic. Excerpt from A Brief View of the English Drama My Dear How. Words are but a poor return for deeds, and yet, as sincere expressions of sentiments, they may sometimes produce substantial gratification, at least to the utterer, and in this belief I dedicate my little book to you, one of my oldest and kindest friends. I do not fear but that the subject is worthy of your attention, for it relates to poetry and the elegant arts; and in these you have been gifted with a pure taste and a discriminating judgment, and to their professors have ever shown a delicate attention and frequently valuable assistance. Excerpt from A Short History of the English Stage: From Its Beginnings to the Summer of the Year 1908 In dealing with so large a subject in a comparatively small space, it is obviously impossible to be exhaustive. I have omitted mention of obscure and extinct theatres whose history has no special bearing on that of the stage, and similar considerations will explain why Grand Opera and the Variety Theatres have seemed to me to be outside the scope of the present volume. Excerpt from A Contribution to the History of the English Commonwealth Drama Active resistance, too, to the ordinance soon developed. At the Fortune theatre no pretence was made of obeying the law: plays were given there often, and complaints of the performances were made to the Parliament. Sir Henry Mildmay 28 records in his diary seeing plays performed on August 20 and November 16, 1643, the latter performance being interrupted by soldiers. On October 2, 1643, the persistent players at the Fortune were interrupted in the midst of their play by a body of soldiers and violently despoiled of their costumes. The picturesque story as given by the Weekly Account (october 4, runs thus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from English Drama of the Restoration and Eighteenth Century (1642-1780) Despite the activity of research in the general field of English drama, and the marked growth of critical interest in its contemporary aspects, little heed has yet been given to certain earlier periods of modern English drama which help to explain its later de velopment. For the most part, students of English dramatic history have preferred even the by-paths and meanders of Elizabethan drama to the main travelled roads that lead onward from the eighteenth century. In one of the bibliographical notes in his admirable volume entitled T raged}, Professor A. H. Thorndike puts the case tersely Ward's History of Dramatic Literature ends with the death of Queen Anne; and there is no adequate history of the English drama for the last two centuries, and no good bibliography.' So vigorously, indeed, have almost all the fields of English literature been cul tivated, that it is doubtful whether there now remains any other equally neglected area comparable in breadth with that clearly suggested by Professor Thorndike. His own concluding chapters, though confined to tragedy, form, in fact, one of the few significant contributions toward the broader critical investigation which must review the whole course of modern English dramatic development. Excerpt from The Later English Drama: With an Introduction and Notes IT is the object of this book to present in convenient and accessible form what has been done best in the English drama from the time of Goldsmith to the present. For this purpose six plays, all of which still retain a place on the stage, have been selected, and, that the usefulness of the book might be increased, a number of notes have been added. The texts are given complete, including dedications, prefaces, prologues, and epilogues. Only one expurgation has been made and that is indicated in its proper place. Excerpt from The Renascence of the English Drama: Essays, Lectures, and Fragments; Relating to the Modern English Stage, Written and Delivered in the Years 1883-94 I can well understand and sympathise with the feelings of impatience and resentment which these essays and lectures have aroused in many quarters during the last ten years, and I have always known that there was much worldly wisdom in the advice of the many friends who have so constantly urged me to hold my tongue upon the subject of the drama. It is a shrewd instinct in the public mind which prompts it to suspect that in matters of art the same great law prevails which it so constantly finds true in matters of morals - namely, that talking and doing are in inverse proportion to each other. And no one is more firmly convinced than I of the stupendous uselessness and impertinence of all preaching and criticism that does not fall in with the growing tendencies of thought around it.
