CHAPTER VP THE STABILITY AND EXTENSION OF THE WORKS OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL--HE IS DECLARED BY THE HOLY SEE, PATRON OF WORKS OF CHARITY IN FRANCE, AND AFTERWARDS OF THOSE OF THE WHOLE WORLD The men who are truly great are those whose works not only survive them, but whose works time, that destroyer of everything, only serves to strengthen and expand. The Congregation of the Mission, almost completely destroyed by the Revolution, rose from amidst its ruins, and to-day is more numerous and more widespread than in the eighteenth century. The Sisters of Charity number more than twenty thousand, and are to be found all over the world. The Ladies of Charity have also multiplied, and there is no city, town, or village where ladies of the world may not be met who deem it an honour, after the example of the De Gondis, the D'Aiguillons and the Lamoignons, to seek out the garrets of the poor, to sweep their rooms and to make their beds. But the great work that has brought the name and influence of Vincent de Paul prominently forward is that of the conferences which bear his name. A mustard-seed in the beginning, to-day it is a great tree whose branches cover the earth. Where are there not to be met members of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society in their holy and charitable conferences? They are 1 The documents contained in this chapter have been borrowed from the Annals of the Congregation of the Mission, a publication of the Vincentian Fathers. 233 scattered over two hemispheres, and at present there are more than four thousand branches of this society devoted to the service of the poor. Whilst all the works instituted by Saint Vincent de Paul have been developing and increasing, many others have sprung up modelled on his, for their founders knew...

Steadfast Charity covers the history of the Sisters of Charity of Halifax during the years 1972—2002 as the congregation met the challenges of Vatican II and created new models for living vowed religious life. New ways of praying, of being community, of giving service, of understanding the vows—all required trust, openness, risk and a willingness to let go of security. As the congregation responded to the call to renewal, little did the sisters realize how much would change. In this book, Sisters of Charity Mary Sweeney, Martha Westwater, Elaine Nolan and Julia Heslin explore these times by examining the life and practices of the sisters and by contextualizing decisions that were made by the governing bodies during those years. They tell the story of an organization and its evolution as a part of the “Church in the Modern World.” The authors offer an inside view of a congregation which, in navigating its transformation through a time of upheaval in the Church and in the world, remained faithful to its purpose, as stated in its Constitutions: “to give joyful witness to love.”

Charity Alive: Sisters of Charity, Halifax, 1950-1980 is the sequel to Sister Maura Power's chronicle of the first one hundred years of the congregation's history (Ryerson, 1956). Based on congregational records and interviews with members of the order, the book traces, describes, and assesses the events which moved the Sisters from the traditional patterns of religious life over the first century into the 1980's. It shows the Sisters' response to the documents of Vatican II and the economic, cultural, and religious challenges during three decades of adaptation, renovation, and renewal. Charity Alive also presents the transformation effected within the congregation which liberated the Sisters and empowered them to reach beyond their traditional ministries of education, health and social services to embrace new forms of ministry such as serving the less visible needs of the economically poor on the fringes of society.
