Excerpt from A Short Introduction to Graphical Algebra The lines Y 0 Y are usually drawn horizontally and vertically they are taken as lines of reference and are known as the axis of X and y respectively. The point 0 is called the origin. Values of x are measured from 0 along the axis of 37, according to some convenient Scale of measurement, and are called abscissae, positive values being drawn to the right of 0 along 0x, and negative values to the left Of 0 along ox'. Values of g are drawn (on the same scale) parallel to the axis of g, from the ends of the corresponding abscissae, and are called ordinates. These are positive when drawn above X'X, negative when drawn below X'X. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. There are certain rules that one must abide by in order to create a successful sequel. — Randy Meeks, from the trailer to Scream 2 While we may not follow the precise rules that Mr. Meeks had in mind for s- cessful sequels, we have made a number of changes to the text in this second edition. In the new edition, we continue to introduce new topics with concrete - amples, we provide complete proofs of almost every result, and we preserve the book’sfriendlystyle andlivelypresentation, interspersingthetextwith occasional jokes and quotations. The rst two chapters, on graph theory and combinatorics, remain largely independent, and may be covered in either order. Chapter 3, on in nite combinatorics and graphs, may also be studied independently, although many readers will want to investigate trees, matchings, and Ramsey theory for nite sets before exploring these topics for in nite sets in the third chapter. Like the rst edition, this text is aimed at upper-division undergraduate students in mathematics, though others will nd much of interest as well. It assumes only familiarity with basic proof techniques, and some experience with matrices and in nite series. The second edition offersmany additionaltopics for use in the classroom or for independentstudy. Chapter 1 includesa new sectioncoveringdistance andrelated notions in graphs, following an expanded introductory section. This new section also introduces the adjacency matrix of a graph, and describes its connection to important features of the graph.

Recipient of the Mathematical Association of America's Beckenbach Book Prize in 2012! Group theory is the branch of mathematics that studies symmetry, found in crystals, art, architecture, music and many other contexts, but its beauty is lost on students when it is taught in a technical style that is difficult to understand. Visual Group Theory assumes only a high school mathematics background and covers a typical undergraduate course in group theory from a thoroughly visual perspective. The more than 300 illustrations in Visual Group Theory bring groups, subgroups, homomorphisms, products, and quotients into clear view. Every topic and theorem is accompanied with a visual demonstration of its meaning and import, from the basics of groups and subgroups through advanced structural concepts such as semidirect products and Sylow theory.

This book records my efforts over the past four years to capture in words a description of the form and function of Mathematics, as a background for the Philosophy of Mathematics. My efforts have been encouraged by lec tures that I have given at Heidelberg under the auspices of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, at the University of Chicago, and at the University of Minnesota, the latter under the auspices of the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications. Jean Benabou has carefully read the entire manuscript and has offered incisive comments. George Glauberman, Car los Kenig, Christopher Mulvey, R. Narasimhan, and Dieter Puppe have provided similar comments on chosen chapters. Fred Linton has pointed out places requiring a more exact choice of wording. Many conversations with George Mackey have given me important insights on the nature of Mathematics. I have had similar help from Alfred Aeppli, John Gray, Jay Goldman, Peter Johnstone, Bill Lawvere, and Roger Lyndon. Over the years, I have profited from discussions of general issues with my colleagues Felix Browder and Melvin Rothenberg. Ideas from Tammo Tom Dieck, Albrecht Dold, Richard Lashof, and Ib Madsen have assisted in my study of geometry. Jerry Bona and B.L. Foster have helped with my examina tion of mechanics. My observations about logic have been subject to con structive scrutiny by Gert Miiller, Marian Boykan Pour-El, Ted Slaman, R. Voreadou, Volker Weispfennig, and Hugh Woodin.

We wrote this book to introduce undergraduates to some interesting ideas in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra. Until recently, these topics involved a lot of abstract mathematics and were only taught in graduate school. But in the 1960's, Buchberger and Hironaka discovered new algorithms for manipulating systems of polynomial equations. Fueled by the development of computers fast enough to run these algorithms, the last two decades have seen a minor revolution in commutative algebra. The ability to compute efficiently with polynomial equations has made it possible to investigate complicated examples that would be impossible to do by hand, and has changed the practice of much research in algebraic geometry. This has also enhanced the importance of the subject for computer scientists and engineers, who have begun to use these techniques in a whole range of problems. It is our belief that the growing importance of these computational techniques warrants their introduction into the undergraduate (and graduate) mathematics curricu lum. Many undergraduates enjoy the concrete, almost nineteenth century, flavor that a computational emphasis brings to the subject. At the same time, one can do some substantial mathematics, including the Hilbert Basis Theorem, Elimination Theory and the Nullstellensatz. The mathematical prerequisites of the book are modest: the students should have had a course in linear algebra and a course where they learned how to do proofs. Examples of the latter sort of course include discrete math and abstract algebra.
