A succinct, expert guide to how we got to Brexit After all the debates, manoeuvrings, recriminations and exaltations, Brexit is upon us. But, as Kevin O'Rourke writes, Brexit did not emerge out of nowhere: it is the culmination of events that have been under way for decades and have historical roots stretching back well beyond that. Brexit has a history. O'Rourke, one of the leading economic historians of his generation, explains not only how British attitudes to Europe have evolved, but also how the EU's history explains why it operates as it does today - and how that history has shaped the ways in which it has responded to Brexit. Why are the economics, the politics and the history so tightly woven together? Crucially, he also explains why the question of the Irish border is not just one of customs and trade, but for the EU goes to the heart of what it is about. The way in which British, Irish and European histories continue to interact with each other will shape the future of Brexit - and of the continent. Calm and lucid, A Short History of Brexit rises above the usual fray of discussions to provide fresh perspectives and understanding of the most momentous political and economic change in Britain and the EU for decades.

On June 23, 2016, the United Kingdom called its voters at the polls to vote on a referendum on the country's stay in the European Union. 51.89% of voters voted for Leave, the exit against 48.11 in favor of Remain, the permanence, with a turnout of 71.8% of the electorate (over 30 million people ). The country was very divided. Scotland (62%), London (59.9%), Northern Ireland (55.8%), and the overseas territory of Gibraltar (95.9%) were in favor of Remain. The vote also appeared very divided demographically, with young people between 18-24 and 25-34 years old who voted 73% and 62% respectively to stay in Europe. In this book, I investigate the situation wherein the United Kingdom withdraws its membership of the European Union, concentrating on the economic consequences thereof. I describe the UK's history with the EU and the possible frameworks for their future relationship. I produce analyses of the economic changes to UK trade, with a focus on the benefits of the Single Market, the City of London and the financial sector, and the labor market in response to changes in immigration. I discuss the probability of each possible future relationship based on UK and EU preferences, evaluate the consequences for the UK. Overall, my findings suggest that the UK will negotiate a Free Trade Agreement with the EU, yet will suffer significant economic repercussions from exiting the Union. This is largely because the UK will have to give up sovereignty in trade for market access, and the UK is disinclined to do so.

Britain's departure from the European Union is riddled with myth and misinformation -- yet the risks are very real. Brexit could diminish the UK's power, throw its legal system into turmoil, and lower the standard of living of 65m citizens. In this revised bestseller, Ian Dunt explains why leaving the world's largest trading bloc will leave Britain poorer and key industries like finance and pharma struggling to operate. Based on extensive interviews with trade and legal experts, Brexit: What the Hell Happens Now? is a searching exploration of Brexit shorn of the wishful thinking of its supporters in the British media and Parliament. REVIEWS Admirably brief and necessarily brutal ... Whatever your position during the referendum, you ought to read Dunt because he is willing to face uncomfortable facts. Highly recommended. -- Nick Cohen, The Spectator Compact and easily digestible. I'd encourage anyone who is confused, fascinated or frustrated by Brexit to read this book - you'll be far wiser by the end of it. -- Caroline Lucas, Co-Leader, Green Party I would strongly recommend Ian Dunt's excellent guide. Dunt has taken the extraordinary step of asking a set of experts what they think. I learnt a lot. -- Philip Collins, Prospect Author Bio IAN DUNT is a political journalist and commentator. He is editor of Politics.co.uk, has a strong social media following, and appears on the BBC, Sky and LBC. He is a cast member of the Remainiacs podcast. He swears a lot on his Twitter feed.

Kafka meets The Thick Of It in a bitingly funny new political satire from Ian McEwan That morning, Jim Sams, clever but by no means profound, woke from uneasy dreams to find himself transformed into a gigantic creature. Jim Sams has undergone a metamorphosis. In his previous life he was ignored or loathed, but in his new incarnation he is the most powerful man in Britain – and it is his mission to carry out the will of the people. Nothing must get in his way: not the opposition, nor the dissenters within his own party. Not even the rules of parliamentary democracy. With trademark intelligence, insight and scabrous humour, Ian McEwan pays tribute to Franz Kafka’s most famous work to engage with a world turned on its head.

The anatomy of Britain on the edge of Brexit, by Orwell Prize winning journalist Since Britain’s 2016 referendum on EU membership, the nation has been profoundly split: one side fantasizing that the referendum will never be acted upon, the other entrenched in questionable assumptions about reclaimed sovereignty and independence. Underlying the cleavage are primal myths, deeper histories, and political folk-legends. James Meek, “the George Orwell of our times,” goes in search of the stories and consequences arising out of a nation’s alienation from itself. In Dreams of Leaving and Remaining, Meek meets farmers and fishermen intent on exiting the EU despite the loss of protections they will incur. He reports on a Cadbury’s factory shut down and moved to Poland in the name of free market economics, exploring the impact on the local community left behind. He charts how the NHS is coping with the twin burdens of austerity and an aging population. Dreams of Leaving and Remaining is urgent reporting from one of Britain’s finest journalists. James Meek asks what we can recover from the debris of an old nation as we head towards new horizons, and what we must leave behind. There are no easy answers, and what he creates instead is a masterly portrait of an anxious, troubled nation.
