The ability to construct a nuanced narrative or complex character in the constrained form of the short story has sometimes been seen as the ultimate test of an author's creativity. Yet during the time when the short story was at its most popular - the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - even the greatest writers followed strict generic conventions that were far from subtle. This expanded and updated translation of Florence Goyet's influential La Nouvelle, 1870-1925: Description d'un genre à son apogée (Paris, 1993) is the only study to focus exclusively on this classic period across different continents. Ranging through French, English, Italian, Russian and Japanese writing - particularly the stories of Guy de Maupassant, Henry James, Giovanni Verga, Anton Chekhov and Akutagawa Ry?nosuke - Goyet shows that these authors were able to create brilliant and successful short stories using the very simple 'tools of brevity' of that period. In this challenging and far-reaching study, Goyet looks at classic short stories in the context in which they were read at the time: cheap newspapers and higher-end periodicals. She demonstrates that, despite the apparent intention of these stories to question bourgeois ideals, they mostly affirmed the prejudices of their readers. In doing so, her book forces us to re-think our preconceptions about this 'forgotten' genre.

For four minutes and fifty-two seconds, the night became a thing that he pounded with his fist...Every year, at the height of summer, the remote Argentinian village of Laborde holds the prestigious national malambo contest. Little known outside the Argentinian pampas, the malambo is a centuries-old gaucho dance, governed by the most rigid rules and shatteringly physically demanding. It is the object of obsession for thousands of young working-class men, who sacrifice their spare time, their bodies and what little money they have to try to win the title of Malambo Champion. The twist is that a Malambo Champion may never compete again. In 2011, Leila Guerriero travelled to Laborde for what was supposed to be a brief investigation into this intriguing contest. But on the second night, one dancer's towering performance takes her breath away - he doesn't win, but Guerriero, irresistibly drawn, spends the next year following him in his preparations for the 2012 festival. In this remarkable work of reportage Guerriero proves herself to be as sharp-eyed as Gay Talese, as lyrical as Norman Mailer.

"This book at last provides a comprehensive answer to the age-old riddle of whether there are only a small number of 'basic stories' in the world. Using a wealth of examples, from ancient myths and folk tales, via the plays and novels of great literature to the popular movies and TV soap operas of today, it shows that there are seven archetypal themes which recur throughout every kind of storytelling." "But this is only the prelude to an investigation into how and why we are 'programmed' to imagine stories in these ways, and how they relate to the inmost patterns of human psychology. Drawing on a vast array of examples, from Proust to detective stories, from the Marquis de Sade to E.T., Christopher Booker then leads us through the extraordinary changes in the nature of storytelling over the past 200 years, and why so many stories have 'lost the plot' by losing touch with their underlying archetypal purpose."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Mia is a young woman who leaves her small hometown in Umbria, Italy, to start a new life in New York. Day by day, through backbreaking work shifts and endless passion, she carves her space within the art world of the Big Apple. Among the sparkling mundanity, the drugs, the pleasures of food and the hypocrisy of her new world, Mia manages to nourish genuine friendships, find true love and build a family. But not all dreams are meant to last forever, and Mia will soon be faced with the most unbearable pain a mother can experience, and will have to appeal to her inner strength to put her life back on track. The narrative voice of this Simple Story is Angela, Mia’s daughter. In a humorous, innocent but real tone, she will take you into her and her mother’s life, and touch the most sensitive cords of your soul. Anne Lamunière grew up in Geneva, but soon moved to Italy then to New York as fast as she could. Set design being her first passion, she worked in the restaurant business for years. Having now settled back in her home country for the past fifteen years, her career as a specialist in Post War and Contemporary Art has taught her that everything is possible if you climb on the right trains, and that anyone can have multiple new exciting beginnings in life. After a Master’s degree in Political Science and a first job at McDonald’s, Maria Antonietta Bonacci discovered the world of the media and developed a passion for storytelling. An international career in Marketing and Communication followed in the field of high jewelry and finance with the certainty that one day she’d write a short story that would hopefully mean something to someone out there. Her motto: dreams come true if you believe in them and if you have precious friends to help you make them happen.

The Short Story written by Valerie Shaw and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-21 with Literary Criticism categories.
Throughout this text, Valerie Shaw addresses two key questions: 'What are the special satisfactions afforded by reading short stories?' and 'How are these satisfactions derived from each story's literary techniques and narrative strategies?'. She then attempts to answer these questions by drawing on stories from different periods and countries - by authors who were also great novelists, like Henry James, Flaubert, Kafka and D.H. Lawrence; by authors who specifically dedicated themselves to the art of the short story, like Kipling, Chekhov and Katherine Mansfield; by contemporary practitioners like Angela Carter and Jorge Luis Borges; and by unfairly neglected writers like Sarah Orne Jewett and Joel Chandler Harris.
