"This report was developed under the Army Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The Simulated Field Exercise (SimFX) tool was designed to help small unit leaders make good decisions while immersed in an ever widening array of information technologies. Rather than focus training on the specifications and capabilities of new technologies, we provide students with computer-based scenarios that force them to resolve ambiguous or contradictory input from remote sensors, fuse disparate sources of information, filter information, and manage resources. SimFX exploits the cognitive realism that comes from engaging a trainee in a branching story in which the trainee must make a series of decisions that ultimately affect how the story plays out. The consequences and feedback are predicated not just on the alternative chosen but on the information sources used to make the decision. Thus, emphasis is placed on the student's ability to collect and use information. SimFX consists of two components: the Player presents a scenario to the trainee and the Author allows training developers to create story- based scenarios or deliberate practice exercises. SimFX is a low-cost, easy to use training tool that has been favorably received by potential users in the Army training community."--Stinet.

For more than 25 years, the pioneering research and theories of Norbert Seel have had a profound impact on educational thought in mathematics. In this special tribute, an international panel of researchers present the current state of model-based education: its research, methodology, and technology. Fifteen stimulating, sometimes playful chapters link the multiple ways of constructing knowledge (and domains as diverse as cognitive science, computer science, and philosophy) to the complex real world of skill development; generalize model-based theories into educational settings; and explain how to design and evaluate model-centered learning environments. Extensive reading lists, provocative graphics, and a wealth of cultural touchstones from the Bible to Bob Dylan make Understanding Models for Learning and Instruction an accessible yet thought provoking collection. A sampling of the topics covered: Evidence-based assessment of learning models Translating cognitive theory into educational practice New approaches to tracking mental change over time Applying psychoeducational theory to the hands-on classroom Using games as a strategy for constructing model-centered learning environments Externalizing mental models with Mindtools This synthesis of latest innovations and fresh perspectives on classic constructs makes Understanding Models for Learning and Instruction cutting-edge reading for the researchers and educators in mathematics instruction building the next generation of educational models.

If you had the opportunity to probe the future, make strategic choices, and view their consequences before making expensive and irretrievable decisions, wouldn't you take advantage of it? Of course you would. And in a world of asymmetrical conflict, security threats, intense global competition, and economic uncertainty, there is an even higher premium on road-testing plans and strategies--whether they're spearheaded by government organizations, transnational corporations, or emerging megacommunities. Wargaming for Leaders provides a methodology to get at the issues that one leader, no matter how visionary, cannot grasp on his or her own. How? By bringing together the real experts on the topic at hand to wage “cognitive warfare.” Through tapping the collective wisdom surrounding an issue, experts can experience the future in a risk-free environment and find answers to questions that had not been on their radar--often with unexpected and startling results. With examples from the fields of military, corporate, and public policy, three wargaming developers from Booz Allen Hamilton deliver compelling insights on this problem-solving method, including fascinating details on how A large equipment manufacturer determined whether making a merger was strategically right for its business growth, as well as which technology investments it needed to drop A four-star U.S. general tested his war plan for Iraq and uncovered specific fixes that might have prevented a prolonged conflict An increasingly clogged air-traffic system faced a security-versus-convenience issue determined whether military airspace could be used during peak demand periods Wargaming allows organizations of every type and every size to organize information, plot out scenarios, and tap into the collective expertise of participants. The results allow everyone to identify and tackle obstacles, solve problems, and find new ways to innovate and further performance goals. Get ready for the battle of your organizational life--and prepare to reap the spoils of victory.
