The second edition of A Handbook for the Study of Mental Health provides a comprehensive review of the sociology of mental health. Chapters by leading scholars and researchers present an overview of historical, social and institutional frameworks. Part I examines social factors that shape psychiatric diagnosis and the measurement of mental health and illness, theories that explain the definition and treatment of mental disorders and cultural variability. Part II investigates effects of social context, considering class, gender, race and age, and the critical role played by stress, marriage, work and social support. Part III focuses on the organization, delivery and evaluation of mental health services, including the criminalization of mental illness, the challenges posed by HIV, and the importance of stigma. This is a key research reference source that will be useful to both undergraduates and graduate students studying mental health and illness from any number of disciplines.

While recent developments in psychopharmacology have been widely disseminated, equally important advances in psychological strategies for severe mental health problems have received less attention. Filling a crucial gap in the literature, this volume brings together leading clinical scientists to present evidence-based approaches for treating schizophrenia, severe mood disorders, substance use problems, and severe personality disorders. Cutting-edge modalities represented include cognitive-behavioral therapies, couple and family treatments, motivational interviewing, group work, and others. Written in a highly practical style, each chapter reviews the empirical basis for the treatment at hand; explains basic concepts and applications; and provides step-by-step implementation guidelines, concrete clinical examples, and patient-therapist dialogues. Also discussed are ways to modify each approach for different populations and strategies for integrating psychological and pharmacological treatments.

Writing by seriously mentally ill people is not common. The illness makes effective communication difficult, and for this reason, the writing they do is important. It provides insights into what the mentally ill experience. Also, it is a sharing of experience that may reduce the isolation and increase the sense of belonging among those who are ill. And fellow sufferers may pay attention and learn from the writer, in this case, how to achieve recovery. How then is recovery to be achieved? To begin with recovery has two meanings. It usually means to regain one’s health. But in the mental health field it has recently come to mean finding meaning and fulfillment despite continuing, even serious, illness. This involves taking measures to bring about change and find value and purpose. The author found recovery through her religious faith and writing. The author tells her story, and in doing so gives direction and offers encouragement. And in doing this she lets the seriously mentally ill know they are not alone.

Experts discuss the potential of early intervention to transform outcomes for people with mental disorders. Mental illness represents one of the largest disease burdens worldwide, yet treatments have been largely ineffective in improving the quality of life for millions of affected individuals—in part because approaches taken have focused on late-stage disorders in adulthood. This volume shifts the focus by placing the developmental stage of “youth” at the center of mental health. The contributors challenge current nosology, explore mechanisms that underlie the emergence of mental disorders, and propose a framework to guide early intervention. Offering recommendations for the future, the book holds that early intervention in youth has the potential to transform outcomes for people with mental disorders and to reconfigure the landscape of mental health. The contributors discuss epidemiology, classification, and diagnostic issues, including the benefits of clinical staging; the context for emerging mental disorders, including both biological and sociocultural processes; biological mechanisms underlying risk for psychopathology, including aspects of neural circuitry; and developing and implementing prevention and early intervention, including assessment and intervention modalities and knowledge translation in early treatment of schizophrenia. Research has indicated that spiritual and religious factors are strongly tied to a host of mental health variables, both positive and negative. That body of research has significantly grown since publication of the first edition 20 years ago. The second edition of the Handbook of Spirituality and Religion and Mental Health identifies not only whether religion and spirituality influence mental health and vice versa, but also how and for whom. The contents have been re-organized to speak specifically to categories of disorders in the first part of the book and then more broadly to life satisfaction issues in the latter part of the book. Hence 100% of the book is now revised with new chapters and new contributors.
