Excerpt from A Social Conspiracy, or Under the Ban: A Novel Pearl, who until this moment was absorbed in the swift revolutions of her mimic pin-wheel, hearing a loud plash, and seeming the little form of Fra strug gling in the water, quickly commanded herself, and seizing her baby sister by the hair, dragged her out with a force which sent both of them rolling over together upon the wharf. The strange incident was enacted so quickly that neither of the children realized the peril which both had miraculously escaped. To Pearl the river had proved itself the great water giant her mother had so often warned her against, and which, to punish her for her disobedience, had opened its jaws and tried to swallow little Fra. The fact of having successfully snatched her back inspired Pearl to give the giant a defiant glance, and 'seizing Fra by the hand she bade her look and see the great hole they had left; but to her astonishment the river ran on as smoothly and unbrokenly as ever, and only the sad face of little Fra and her sopping wet garments remained to tell the tale. This work examines, among other topics, the personal oath of loyalty that the officers of the German army swore to Adolf Hitler on August 2, 1934. It discusses how the majority of officers--those who did not become conspirators against him--complied with Hitler's orders until May 1945 despite his cruel treatment of soldiers, militarily unsound strategy and tactics, and the widespread destruction and crimes he and his forces committed. The oath taken by the officers had a strong psychological effect among a proud corps with a long history of obedience and honor. They followed Hitler to the end even though they knew they were fighting a losing battle. The author also examines why and how only a few officers, the conspirators, began to break away, lose trust in Hitler, oppose him and finally stage an assassination attempt. This history traces the development within the German army from 1918 of the philosophies of loyalty and disloyalty--and obedience and disobedience--as challenged by the Hitlerian oath of loyalty.
