Excerpt from A Sojourn in India: Her Manners, Customs, Religion and Its Origin I have the pleasure of writing the preface of this interesting book of Mr. Sarbadhicary, whose style of writing impresses me with the idea that he has received very good education. The Earl of Aberdeen, of England, told him, "your book is excee dingly interesting ; the composition is very good so I shall read it with great pleasure. I beg to reciprocate my good wishes to you in giving you a cheque of five pounds." Earl Compton, Professor J. Kirkpatrick, M.A., LL.B., University College of Edinburgh, Professor Elphinstone, M.A., Barrister-at-Law, of London, Dr. J. Carment, LL.D., an eminent lawyer of Edinburgh, Colonel Davies, and many others of England and Scotland have spoken very highly of his former works. When they reached this country I saw in The Electric Age, a widely-circulated journal, a very flattering notice, in which Mr. Wm. J. Dealy, manager of the largest telegraph office in the world, remarked, "I marvel at Mr. Sarbadhicary's book; it is in many respects one of the most interesting works I have ever read. He is a scholar and evidently a man of grand character. He is worthy of encouragement," The editor himself remarks,. "the book has been written in vivid English style." Holistic MidLife Coach Ellen Besso had always wanted to travel to India. As a coach and author who helps women uncover their passions, find new directions in life, and put spirituality into practice in their daily lives, for as long as she could remember, she had a preoccupation with India and its people, feeling drawn to go there. An Indian Sojourn: One woman's spiritual experience of travel & volunteering is a wonderful book describing Ellen Besso's travel in India. Ellen writes: "India's draw is complex; we can't understand it within the frame of reference of our Western minds, and that is part of what pulls us in. Once our constant internal analysis abates, we're more open to flowing with what is unfolding around us. To say that the environment there is over stimulating would be an understatement. People, vehicles, cows, even the colours are de trop, but my approach has been, "bring it on." I was thirsty for India after waiting for her so long and I wanted to soak in every tiny little detail." Ellen and her partner Don have now made three journeys visiting India, in 2007, 2009 and again very recently. During their travel to India, they made lifelong friends, volunteering and tutoring Tibetan refugees in Dharamsala, India. Ellen looks forward to returning to India again in the future. Ellen writes: "I invite you to join me on my journey, through the ups and downs of travel and volunteering, meet the people we developed strong friendships with, and enjoy the fascination and wild rides that are India. This book is also about the heartfelt stories of refugees, fellow travellers and the Indian people themselves and the effort of trying to understand cultures very different from ours. Ultimately though it is the moments when we are not so far apart that defines An Indian Sojourn." An Indian Sojourn - One woman's spiritual experience of travel and volunteering is the second book in Ellen Besso's MidLife Maze Series.

As a result of developments in the global marketplace, an increasing number of business organizations send employees on international assignments, or sojourns. However, employees who sojourn without adequate preparation are often left vulnerable to culture shock. If severe and widespread, culture shock can ultimately contribute to the failure of the overseas operations, at great cost to both the employees and the business organizations. Cross-cultural training (CCT) can prepare sojourners for international work assignments and can have a positive impact on sojourner adjustment and success in the foreign culture. This dissertation describes a CCT program developed and implemented at a major manufacturing firm involved in a transfer of technology project. There is extensive literature describing approaches and theories associated with CCT. There are very few examples of actual training programs that have been conducted and critiqued. The design of this program is presented and discussed in light of the extant literature of CCT. The reactions and evaluations of the participants as well as the researcher/trainer are also discussed. Recommendation for future research is offered.

'Whom do I thank for the experiences of life...?' As this war memoir with a difference demonstrates, the answer - along, of course, with the author's parents - is the Royal Navy. Sojourn India describes in vivid detail the true story of a nineteen-year-old's tumultuous journey across the Atlantic and via the Suez Canal to HMS Garuda, Coimbatore, India. World War II is drawing to a close, and the young recruits' excitement at their exotic posting soon yields to a pervasive sense of monotony, relieved only by cinema visits, exploring the town Coimbatore and trips to the hills, and - on occasion - casual brutality... This thoughtful book paints a compelling picture of India, replete with char-wallahs, snake charmers, ornate temples and packed, breathless trains inching through the flatlands south to the sea. It captures well the tedium and tension of life on a 'stone frigate', from the routine of working as a mechanical engineer on aircraft to the jubilation of VJ Day and, finally, escape.

"Sojourn - In the Soul of India' has been inspired by the innumerable requests of the author's young friends at IIT Delhi, her alma mater where she returned to do her Doctorate after a gap of more than 25 years. The book is a collection of anecdotes describing the author's experience of working in rural India as an IAS officer and the issues which cropped up as she focused on technology interventions, among other concerns, in these areas. The book serves as a mirror of her varied and enriching pursuits in the villages of our beautiful country.
