Foreword These pictures communicate poignant and powerful memories that all of those of our generation have - those who were in Vietnam can almost sense and taste it all again and those who were not remember less stark photographs and less personal from magazines and television. It is as if all of us were and are one family and this is an aching part of our family photo album. The images, the photos, are so good, so moving, and the colors so rich, I expect that at any moment they may come to life - as still photos do sometimes in the beginning of films or on commercials on television. In other words the color and the shadowing of the photos, the candid nature of each of the shots, the colors of the earth and of the World of Vietnam, raises up vivid memories in me and my friends and my generation. This is a central part of our growing up, our coming of age, our dreams and nightmares. Time has been standing still in these photos as it does often in memory. Beautiful, innocent, and deeply troubling they are, and each is a reminder of what we try to avoid thinking about - mortality and the preciousness of youth, of beauty, and of justice in the world. This shows the world as it is, and does not show the world as we wish it would be or was. Two or three of these shots together have more power than all of the slick and over-commentated Network News Videos from the 60s. They remain merely tape - the TV productions. These are fragments of real time and real life. Sometimes a photograph - or a collection of photographs - is so powerful that it defies description or comment and all that one hears from the viewer is, "oh!" That is all. That pretty much says it all.Larry Engelmann is the author of six books including Tears Before the Rain: An Oral History of the Fall of South Vietnam (1991).

Available at Blurb.comAfter his diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease from exposure to Agent Orange the author rediscovered hundreds of pictures and letters from his service in Vietnam 1967-1968. Articulate and poignant, the letters describe a young classical guitarist changing into a soldier. The photographs clearly and accurately show the everyday life on the base and in a war-time Vietnam. No history lessons, no pro/anti-war stance, and no political agenda, just a simple human story about an American soldier through his photographs and letters home.

DEATH IN THE TRIANGLE is a sequel to “When Can I Stop Running?”. That was one hell of a night! Only a couple of hours passed since returning to the firebase. Now, the sleep-deprived and weary First Platoon soldiers must go back out on another patrol. Last night, an enemy mortar team fired several rounds into the base and was soon silenced by return artillery fire. The Third Squad also ambushed a group of enemy soldiers leaving nine dead bodies on the trail before moving out to a new location. A thorough search of both areas may locate items overlooked in the dark. It was thought to be an easy patrol – two clicks out and two clicks back, so the brass expected their return before lunch. At least, that was the plan. Many patrols during the Vietnam War did not quite go as planned and this was one of them. These soldiers soon found themselves in dire straits to satisfy their battalion commander’s thirst for body counts and fame. Will they all survive? Sixpack, Polack, LG, and the bunch are back in this new installment from the award-winning author of “Cherries: A Vietnam War Novel.”

Soldier Boy written by Charles Oliver Musser and has been published by University of Iowa Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-11 with History categories.

Blood and anger, bragging and pain, are all part of this young Iowa soldier's vigorous words about war and soldiering. A twenty-year-old farmer from Council Bluffs, Charles O. Musser was one of the 76,000 Iowans who enlisted to wear the blue uniform. He was a prolific writer, penning at least 130 letters home during his term of service with the 29th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Soldier Boy makes a significant contribution to the literature of the common soldier in the Civil War. Moreover, it takes a rare look at the Trans-Mississippi theater, which has traditionally been undervalued by historians. Always Musser dutifully wrote and mailed his letters home. With a commendable eye for historical detail, he told of battles and marches, guerrilla and siege warfare, camp life and garrison soldiering, morale and patriotism, Copperheads and contraband, and Lincoln's reelection and assassination, creating a remarkable account of activities in this almost forgotten backwater of the war.

A Long Way Gone written by Ishmael Beah and has been published by Sarah Crichton Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

In A Long Way Gone Ishmael Beah tells a riveting story in his own words: how, at the age of twelve, he fled attacking rebels and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence. By thirteen, he'd been picked up by the government army, and Beah, at heart a gentle boy, found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. My new friends have begun to suspect I haven't told them the full story of my life. "Why did you leave Sierra Leone?" "Because there is a war." "You mean, you saw people running around with guns and shooting each other?" "Yes, all the time." "Cool." I smile a little. "You should tell us about it sometime." "Yes, sometime." This is how wars are fought now: by children, hopped-up on drugs and wielding AK-47s. Children have become soldiers of choice. In the more than fifty conflicts going on worldwide, it is estimated that there are some 300,000 child soldiers. Ishmael Beah used to be one of them. What is war like through the eyes of a child soldier? How does one become a killer? How does one stop? Child soldiers have been profiled by journalists, and novelists have struggled to imagine their lives. But until now, there has not been a first-person account from someone who came through this hell and survived. This is a rare and mesmerizing account, told with real literary force and heartbreaking honesty.
